Good Cholesterol

I know you have good and bad, but how do you use diet to increase the good. Like where does it come from? If yolk of eggs are bad because they are high in cholesterol, who is to say it is not going to add to the good? I guess it doesn't make as much sense to me as say eating the healthy fats versus the saturated type etc..
 
Great question, one that might require some research on my part. Off the top of my head though, HDL/LDL/VLDL are lipoproteins, not fats. They are made in your liver, i believe and HDL is responsible for 'cleaning up' various crap floating around in your blood vessels and bringing it to the liver for disposal. LDL is the opposite, it tends to 'dump' crap in one's vascular system thats why the ratio and complete lipid profile is important, not just the total cholesterol. As far as what will tip the balance to favor one over the other, i would think that genetics play the predominant role.

I'll do some more research tonight, gotta dig through some books i have. First though its leg day and then i gotta take my girl out to dinner for our anniversary.
 
In a very small amount of the cases high cholesterol can be genetic, and medications might be necessary. In the rest of the situations, lifestyle change, and diet can really help reduce your cholesterol levels and risk factors. Ironically most of the remedies for high cholesterol ARE natural. Fiber is a cholesterol buster; a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can significantly lower cholesterol levels. Garlic, ginger and fenugreek are all herbs that help lower cholesterol by 10- 15% in just a few short weeks. All of these natural remedies are much easier on the body than the cholesterol blocking medications that can have ramifications on your liver.
 
Just to clarify my total cholesterol is only 155....I do not know off hand the break down of it, but my doctor said I am good. I just wonder when I eat food high in cholesterol how do I know if its helping or hurting. Like I know cooking with olive or flax oil beats butter or bacon fat...but the cholesterol intake and what makes it turn good or bad is where I am confused, and not sure how to research that effectively.
 
Fruit, fiber, and Omega 3 fatty acids along with a good training regime.

The results you get from doing it is so amazing - 60 LDL / 61 HDL for me :)

Also just know if you are genetically prone to high cholesterol as that can be an issue too.

1. bananas - can raise your good HDL cholesterol and help reduce the bad LDL

2. Oats - they also do the same.

I am not sure about the bananas, but eating oats can lower bad cholesterol.

When you look at the fat content of a food it breaks it down so you can see if its good or bad fat....my question is when you look at how much cholesterol is in something it just says cholesterol.....so how do you know if its going to turn into the good or the bad? For instance is the cholesterol of an egg yolk good or bad....vs like cholesterol of a steak.
 
dietary cholesterol has very little impact on you cholesterol levels.

your cholesterol levels suffer more of an impact from saturated fats, and lack of active living.
