Now that I own a home I seem to spending more money. I use my credit card for everything. I still have never paid a minimum payment or carried a balance. I pay it off at the end of every month. It hasn't been less then a thousand since I moved into my home. I only have one card. I do not earn anything while using this card. I'm looking for a card that you earn money, points or w/e with while using. I always see them out there just don't know which one is the best. What do you guys use?

It depends what you are looking for.

American Express seems to be the best, especially if you don't intend on keeping a balance. They seem to be partnered up with more people and offer some pretty good perks like getting tickets in advance to some events, frequent flyer miles, and crap like that.

Yeah, American express is great, because nobody accepts the shit. You will never have to worry about falling into debt when you can't charge it anywhere.

Here is what I have done for the last 7 years. I have built up credit like crazy by maxing out a card, then applying for a new card with no APR for 6 months or some shit like that. I pay the balance of one card with the new one. I slowly pay off the balance of the new card while there is no interest. As soon as the no APR thing is about to stop, get a new card with no APR. Rinse and repeat. I have done this for a while, and it made my credit score skyrocket. I refuse to pay interest on anything other than the 3.4% on my student loan.

Having good credit is nice.

I've never encountered a situation where I couldn't use Amex. Although, If I ever decide to go to the Olympics, I am screwed.

You have to be careful with that card swapping thing. Too many times and then they start seeing as a negative, not a positive. I've seen it shown as something about lack of long term commitments. You don't have to keep a balance on them but ditching the card and starting a new one every 6 months doesn't look good either over time.

Jodi is right on that one plus keeping and not using several is also bad on the long haul.

I don't like that idea. I have great credit with my one card. My score when I bought my home back in November was 813. The third highest my mortgage broker has seen. People with bad credit always try to tell me how to get my rating higher. Like a fat guy giving diet advice. Not saying you have bad credit. I just pay off every bill I have on time. I was never late on any payment in my life. If you don't have the money for something, then you don't buy it. That is how you build up great credit.

Same thinking here. If you can't afford it, don't buy it. I use a credit card as a substitute for not carrying 600$ in cash, not as a substitute for cash I don't have.

But I never get rid of them completely. I have at least 6 cards that I use all of the time. I am just saying that I never pay interest. I have a capital One card that is 6 years old. I charge on it sometimes. Also, another thing I'll do is only use my card for about 2 months before my student loan check is sent out. I'll max out a card, then pay it off completely with my student loan. While I do all of this, I usually have a few thousand in the bank that I don't touch. Trust me, I look at my credit score at least 3 times a year and it has steadily been going up.

Yeah, mine is in the 800s also. There are so many tricks to bumping your credit, it just takes discipline. I have always been great with money. I watch my dumbass friends spend money they don't have on shit they don't need.

But anywho, if I were going to get one card, I would get a capital one. It is accepted everywhere visa is, and visa is accepted everywhere. Capital One has a great interest rate and I think they are still running the savings zone rewards. Look it up.

I currently have a Visa. I don't care about interest rates because I never carry a balance.

I like Airmiles

Yes, I fly a decent amount also. Close to 10 times a year. I looked into the US Airways card but they want 100$ a year. Of course you get access to the Admirals club.

I have a capital one card, not bad, I have a WAMU card with a flat 5% APR and free monthly updates of my credit, which is helpful. They have sent me offers to gain points and miles, I just don't activate them.

I have Citi Simplicity card.

One thing to check out when you get your credit cards is that don't get fooled with those rewards things. A lot of times, such as Citi Card, they have lower APR options but without the rewards points. I prefer the lower APR

I go thru Frost with a low APR no frills card. It's the cheapest my bank has to offer and has no sneaky business.

I have my HSBC Platinum Rewards 1%. It's not the best offer out there, but it's so convenient having the same bank handle everything. No worries about payment fuckups and whatnot.

Yup, that's what my Simplicity card is. See if you want the rewards ones they jack up the APR by a couple points. The Simplicity is the lowest APR that Citi offers and it's no annual fee and no rewards but it has a sweet APR for those with good credit.

Does anyone know if there is a good website or have any advice/guide to learning how to manage your credit card score? I turned 21 about a month ago and i will be getting a credit card soon. I have never used one before and i'm not exactly as experienced as you guys are so i need a little help here so i don't run into debt in the future.

I will say, however, i am very careful with my money. I am one of the rare types that only buys what i need. I never buy stuff i want until i am 100% sure i can afford it. I am a big saver.

Just make sure you have enough cash to buy whatever it is. I look at my card no different than I look at my cash, the only difference is I use my card to build credit, and I also get to hold on to that cash 30 days past when I spent it, and basically accrue free money from the interest of it sitting in the bank until I pay the bill in full at the end of the month.

The single most important thing, I think, is to NEVER have a late payment. Ever. That will fuck so much shit up.

Start buy using and paying off the card like doublebase did, but be careful not to violate the terms of the card issuer. You get a low APR if you are not late, but if you screw the pooch by even one day you get jacked for like as much as 26% interest on the entire balance. Even if your due date is on a Sunday, and you make the payment on the next BUSINESS day (which is a Monday) through their website, it will be late and you will get spooged (source for that is the Clark Howard Show).

My main card is a Platinum Visa Hawaiian Miles from Bank of America, then I have a Sears card in case we have to by a new washer or dyer. fridge, stove in an emergency.....

I have a sears card too. It's great for big items. I only use it when they have the zero % interest for x amount of months on all purchases over $xxx.xx. Then I pay it off before that time frame expires.
