Good Global Citizenship - What Does It Mean?

In an essay by Kamaludeen Bin Mohamed, Mohamed states: "The global citizen is a sophisticated being. Hence, an essential ingredient of a nuanced global citizen is that he or she is able to see the various shades of social reality and does not indulge in essentializing. This is crucial in our everyday attempt to comprehend how the world works economically, politically, socially, culturally, environmentally, and technologically."

If true, does that mean global citizenship demands we participate in the interactive role of the "citizen journalist," so that we might be as The Melrose Mirror blog asserts, "people who care, share and are aware?"

What do you guys think?

I consider myself a good global citizen, having traveled to many different countries and taken in their cultures, while also living in the huge melting pot of Hawaii I have become in tune with a broader spectrum of reality. Also THC, LSD, mescalin and psilocybin helped me get a better perspective on things and I didn't even have to go anywhere for that.

Just to let you know, i didn't write that ..

It's just a question that popped up while i was in a class discussion about politics. My teacher recently sent me an email so i was wondering what you guys thought about it so i can get different perspectives on the subject.

I didn't say you wrote it, I was saying that it was funny that the writer essentiallized and then says that a nuanced GC doesn't indulge in essentiallization.

I beleive that global citizenship is a key to world peace.

No, i am not. It is not a homework assignment. We have a class website that we have discussions with other students and the teacher and i decided to post here to expand the discussion so i can hear everyone's viewpoints and see what the majority believes in. If you have nothing to say, don't post.
 
Make sure in your term paper that you highlight the use of psychoactive chemicals, if you need some stories as filler I can point you to some of mine I've posted here in the OC.

Instead of maneuvering into a defensive stance why don't you respond to the posts I made on being a global citizen? By only responding to the negative issues in your thread you're the one sending it for a nose dive, learn to ignore the negative and accentuate the positive.

I'm unfamiliar with the citizen journalist and Melrose Mirror, but perhaps I can attempt to comment on the rest. Basically this person is saying that the ideal citizen of the world is essentially a renaissance person: Well-rounded in many disciplines of education and able to have at least a basic understanding of underlying concepts in all areas of life ranging from economics to technology.

If this is what is being said, I truly agree with it. Ignorace causes many, many problems that are really unnecessary in today's world, or at least that's what I think. Helping eliminate ignorance, mostly of others' cultures, will probably help achieve a more universal understanding of each other and lead to a more peaceful world in which many people from many backgrounds can work together to solve complex problems rather than fight each other.

My best guess is that it means that even though we may be comfortable in our own little place in the world, we should make an effort to care about problems and recognize what opportunities exist in other parts of the world. It's easy to dismiss drought and starvation because it may not directly affect us but that doesn't mean we should ignore it as someone else's problem. Environmental problems elsewhere in the world could ultimately affect us here. Culturely we have to accept others religion and ways of life. The muslim world hates Americans because they believe we don't respect their religious beliefs. Politics and economics are the most important aspects for us to have an interactive role in. If the wrong leaders are elected then that country could become a threat to peace locally or worldwide. That's why we are in Iraq. The perceived threat that Sadam Hussein may have weapons of mass destruction forced our hand to go in and attempt to clean up that country and bring some sort of peace to their people. Most of our oil comes from the middle east. If those countries are fighting amonst themselves it threatens oil production which would be a huge crisis over here.
Bottom line, if we are involved as global citizens and show that we are aware, that we care and we can share our help and resources the world will be a better place.
