But you can get full blown custom guns from both shops, no?
I don't believe so, but then the line for full custom starts to blurr here. They are high end production guns, and some additional customizing can be done Im sure, but you pick a model and you buy it. It's not some one of a kind of gun built to your specs, etc as a true custom is, built by hand by a smith who often used different parts from different companies. You might have a Colt frame, with caspian slide, and Kart barrel, etc etc. Like so:
Which puts you squarely in the majority. I think it's a shame though that people feel that way. It's an incredible disservice to one of the finest tools ever invented.
It is the finest combat handgun ever developed. Has been for 100 years, and will be for 100 more. Has nothing to do with it. You dont drop a person who does not drive much into a Formula 1 car. 1911s require a higher level of training, much greater gun skills, a higher level of dedication to up keep, etc, etc. Thats wht your high level combat shooters like FBI HRT, LA SWAT, etc use 1911s, and everyone on the general depts gets a Glock or a Sig. As Hilton Yam said, a man who knows far more about 1911s than just about any human living:
"For a dedicated and knowledgeable end user, the 1911 has no equal. For non-dedicated personnel, they are better served by a modern, low maintenance weapon such as a Glock, SIG, or HK. "
I tend to agree.
If a new shooter were to start off with a high quality 1911 and get some good training it would serve him well for the rest of his life.
Of course, but "good training" is the key term there.
