What is more important to you: the health benefits or physical results of working out?

-Scout

i like the physical results. but health is always number 1 in my book. the extra strength is pretty fun as well

It started out as health for me, but now it's all about the 1RM!!

Health is a complicated concept. Its not just limited to CV capacity, you have physical things like that and strength; mental aspects such as taking out your frustrations somewhere; social health if your friends go to the gym; self-esteem/self-image stuff....its a longer list than you'd think and it all relates to health.

In some capacity i think everybody goes to the gym for the health benefits, whether they're physical or mental or whatever.

Take Flathead for example, he loves the 1RMs. If he couldn't go to the gym and lift heavy weights he wouldn't be as happy as he is now. Being happy = being healthy.

I know this post is stupid, but i've had a load of Health Promotion lectures lately and its in my brain.

Stress relief is huge. Training is my coping mechanism for dealing with life. Gaz is right-Being happy=being healthy.

Very well said!! I didn't even think about the emotional benefits!!

I started because of health issues. I had weak knees and didn't want to ever have one dislocate again.

I kept going because of the physical benefits and now I go to release stress. Well stress and increasing my 1RM :P

both....people don't understand that exercise has a cumulative effect. so the person who has been exercising their entire life will experience much greater health benefits than those that only begin to exercise when they are retired, seniors, etc.

Very true.. good point!

A few reasons:

1.) I love weight lifting. Training makes me feel good, and like Gaz said, happy emotions are a huge part of being healthy.

2.) The health aspect of being mobile, flexible and muscularly balanced. It helps every day when I move around, when I trip over something and when I pick something up.

3.) General health benefits.

There are some unhealthy aspects of my training, but I think the positives outweigh the negatives.
