is there a benefit to doing days that are different rep ranges, ie if your doing an A B A routine, the first A you do heavy between 5-8 reps each exercise, next time you do A you do a lighter weight ie 10-12 reps, i guess its a form of periodisation?

Periodization & active recovery. Absolutely.

There different cycles and cycles within cycles to accommodate growth & recovery - in the short term allowing at least 36 hrs between muscle groups to recover, and over the range of weeks to allow CNS recovery, and even further, bulker / cutter phases to grow and cut, grow and cut.

ME & Speed days are the only way I train. Periodization is key in any routine, IMO!
