I don't have much muscle on me, so most of that weight is fat. I know it's a change of lifestyle, but if I can see that it's working, it's one I'm willing to make.

GOOD FOR YOU.

And we're here to help!

the most important part of losing weight is eating clean. I'm sure you can do a search and find some posts on diets to give you an idea of what you need to be eating. Also, don't forget about cardio if you want to lose weight. I'd suggest alternating weight training and cardio. Mon - lift weights, Tues - Stationary Bike for 30 min etc....

Also, know exactly what your goals are!
Do you want to lose 20lbs or do you want to lose 10lbs of fat and gain 10lbs of muscle.
There's a big difference

Mike,

It is tough when you are home schooled and having a fast food diet when trying to loose weight because you are not burning off those calories. Eating clean will definitely help you drop the weight but more important than that, and this goes for building muscle as well as loosing the weight, is

How bad do you want it!

If you want it bad enough, you're gonna have to make some changes in your life! But you have to make this decision nobody else can.

Like BikerChick said, muscle weighs more than fat and it also burns more calories at rest then fat does. And since you are basically starting out, these changes will come rapidly with the proper guidance. And you've came to the right place because we all start somewhere and we help and support each other. Good luck!

Yes indeedy we are all here to help.. But if you want to drop 30 or 40 pounds over the next two months. That is probably not very healthy.. You should shoot for about 2 pounds a week.. That way you are more apt to keep it off. Much more than that is water loss or muscle loss and you really don't want to loose that.. Muscle burns more than fat does so if you have access to weights you should really start there.. If you need us we'll be here!!!

Well at the moment, I just want to drop the weight. 2 lbs a week sounds bearable, How much water should I drink per day? I've been substituting Diet Dr. Pepper for Coke/Dr. Pepper, is the diet drink still bad? We have a membership to the Q, but my parents each work 50+ hour weeks, so it's not exactly easy to get there. We have a Cardioglide, is that any good? Thanks for the help, it's comforting to know there are people willing to help.

I'm 15, 5'8(maybe 5'9 now) weighing about 185lbs. I'd really like to drop about 30-40 pounds over the summer and I was wondering if it was possible for a 15(well, I'll be 16 in a little less than 2 weeks) year old kid to lose 30-40 pounds in about 2-3 months? How would I go about doing this? My family is really big on fast foods. I'm really sick of this extra weight and it's so depressing. I think that I'd feel much better about myself if I was able to lose some weight.

Hi Mike!

185 for 5'9" doesn't sound that high?!

Do you play high school sports? What do you do for fun? I bet just cutting back on the fast food and getting outside you would drop some weight. I think 30-40lbs in 2-3 months is a little much. I'm sure there are ways to do it but they're probably not too healthy.

What do you think, guys??

It's definately high enough for me to be really overweight.

Well I'm homeschooled, so I'm also kind of anti-social. I don't play any sports. So how much do you think i could lose in 2-3 months? I've got energy, I can never sit still. But since I'm overweight, that energy disappears real quickly.

Mike, getting yourself some weights and a bench would be a good start. Several of the moderators here are personal trainers and could set you up with a good starter routine. Increasing your activity level would also help lose some weight. Take your time cutting weight, it doesnt happen over night.

I would concentrate less on the # of lbs and look to body fat. Muscle weighs more than fat!

There's no real secret to losing weight. It's all about diet and excercise (and time). And you can't think of diet as a temporary crash course, it's really a lifestyle change.

Hope that helps!

I am kind of a newbie to all of this too but when I first started loosing weight I drank about 12 glasses of water a day and limited myself to only one diet drink a day. I was drinking about 16 but I havent been drinking my water too good lately, got to get back on track. I found this place after I started losing weight so I probaly lost alot of muscle when I first started loosing weight. I started in August, 2000 and have lost 46 pounds. Now it is coming off slowly but I would rather that because I dont want to loose muscle. Weight training is awesome, gives me more convidence.
