Hernia Operation.

Hi,

I just had a visit to my doctor today about some abdomen pain I have been experiencing.

It turns out, that I may very well have a hernia developed (developing) in my abdomen region.

I have to get an Ultrasound on Thursday to confirm that this is the case.

As I understand it, a hernia is a deformation of the abdomen that results in parts of the bowel being pushed into the hole like deformity.

The only cure is to have corrective surgery.

I can't see my abs unfortunately so I can't tell if the shape is deformed already or not, but if I do proceed with having a hernia operation performed, will this deform my abdominal appearance?

Are we talking about a umbilical hernia or inguinal? They should be able to tell if you have a hernia w/out an ultrasound! If they need an ultrasound to determine if it's a hernia, it's only the size of the point of a pin and the pain you feel is just a bit of visceral fat catching and pinching in the hole. That being said, if you decided to have it fixed now (which you really don't need to) they would suture the area rather than place a mesh over top so no, there would be no deformities.

The only worry I have is that the problem has been going on for about 3 months now. The doctor I initially saw dianosed another problem, and overlooked the possibility of a hernia.

I am lead to believe this may have caused a further exadgerated hernia.

I am unsure which type of hernia it is, it's quite a new thing to me, I always heard the term 'hernia' but never understood what it was caused by or what it does to the body.

I am only 18 years of age, and it's quite worrying that I have already developed such a thing at such a young age.

The doctor explained to me that it may very well be that the bowel has pushed through the abdominal wall - this is what frightened me the most.

No problem man. I know it's scary to have someone tell you that your bowels may be coming through a hole but don't sweat it. Its caused by heavy lifting, I had my first hernia at 20. Where on your body does it hurt? Usually with the size I think your tear is, it's not your bowels or intestines coming through, because the hole has to be rather large for that. Rather it is the visceral fat that lies just inside your skin, protecting your organs that is pinching through. Good luck!

My pain is on the right side of my abdomen - at around the height of the navel.

Basically, it hurts when I stretch upwards, breathe in, or resume a normal upright posture.

I have had to walk around in a hunchback posture just to keep the pain under control.

It's quite a sharp pain.

I have a Hiatal Hernia in my upper abdominal. Close to my ribs. One of my abdominal muscles is prutruding through the other. Talk about pain when you're doing abdominal exercises, etc....


Here is a link that may help you out or better allow you to understand what it is, how it affects you and ways to cure. Surg. should be your last resort. There are medications they can put you on. Some prefer Nexium which, is what I take. Copy, then paste this in your URL

Well I just went for an Ultrasound today.

The lady who was doing it seems to think it may be a tear in the abdomen wall rather than a hernia.

I assume this is a desired result as opposed to the pain being caused by a hernia, but I will wait to talk to my doctor before breathing a sigh of relief.
