i play hockey as a defensive man and was wondering what you guys think would be the most important for general gains in performance? working out legs- builds up str and allows for quicker skating and more power with each stride, Arms- allow for stronger shots, or would you spend your time doing a variety of upper/lower body work outs?
thanks for the input :thumb:

you still shoot with your hips, not really your arms. the power comes from your core and your anterior oblique subsystem.

I would work on strength levels and power development.

I would also work a lot on lateral movement (strengthen the ab/adductors) as well as single leg balance and stability. Injury prevention is crucial.

ah good advice i appreciate it. a strong shot relies on weight behind it as well which is known as "weight transfer" when you do a slapshot you come down and when doing so you transfer your weight from the back foot to the front foot. so you think the power is comming mostly from the hips?

would running improve my skating speed? or what would improve it the most other than changing the way i skate

hips and core musculature! Power comes from the center. The better stability you have in your core, the better you can transfer power. The more strength you have in your hips and rotational muscles, the greater power you have to transfer.

You need to buy this right now son

i always got ragged on about quick feet in hockey
try doin single leg presses, and do all kinds of core work like P-funk said.
i wouldnt worry too much about doing muscle specific exercises to develop your slapper
just improve everything overall and work on your timing cause its 300 times more important then how big you are

Get yourself a slide board and use it often.

I would focus on leg training, HIIT training, and core movements.

You might want to even look into station training for 25 second bursts.

Get yourself some lead pucks and plexi glass and look for a wall to pratice your shot at, a low strong shot (6 inches off ice) is a defensemens best weapon.

slide boards are great for doing your conditioning on and they also help to build the ab/adductor complex both for concentric and eccentric force production. :thumb:
