Looking at these for the last few weeks, mainly because I have trouble making it to the gym due to my job. (acft dispatcher, hours change week to week, basically one week nights, next days, nights etc.)

Any recommendations? I don't think any will really make up for the gym, but would like to work on when I can't make it because the gyms hours and mine do not mesh. Not worried about cost so much as quality.

if you want to build size stay away from stuff like total body,oe soloflex or any of that stuff..you should get yourself a good bench, that is adjustable for flat and incline, and also a pair of dumbells, both of these you should get with a fair amount of plates...and then as you increase in size purchase more plates

I agree, go with a good squat rack with plenty of adjustments and a incline/flat/decline bench along with some good old iron plates. You may also want to check your local bargin finder for some good deals.

A good incline/flat/decline bench, don`t buy a flat bench, there is just so much more you can do on a incline/flat/decline bench. A quality powerrack is a must especially if you workout alone and a good variety of free weights. :thumb:

Ok, thanks for the inputs. I was looking at the Body Solid machines (among others), but might go for something a bit more complete. Still looking around, but you guys/gals confirmed what I was thinking - real gym type equipment is what to get.

On the other note, my wife wants a bowflex for toning - can't talk her out of it, so we'll probably end up with one at some point. Unless, I can convince her she can still tone up on a regular (read: what I want to get) machine(s)

I agree with shmoo on the power rack, get one.:thumb:
my only problem with a home gym is that I could never stay motivated just lifting in my room. I always need someone aroun so i'll feel like a pussy if I don't give it my all.

I started building my home gym seven years ago. Made lots of expensive mistakes along the way. A squat rack with a quality cable system is the best place to start. Add an adjustable bench and some free weights and you're on your way. I strongly suggest people stay away from the all in one packages. Buy seperate pieces of equipment that you have actually tested. If you think assembling a multistage unit is a pain, it's worse when you need to unassemble, repackage and return to the manufacturer.
good luck.

i bought a weider power rack at sams which includes the adjustable squat rack and bench and cable system and 300 lbs of free wieghts for about 400 dollars well worth the money. i havent found much i couldnt do that i could do in a gym. Other than look at the ladies

I got a Pacific Fitness home gym, I believe it is the Del Mar with the extra set of weights and the leg press attachment. It is a really nice home gym, but cost about $4000. If I did it over I would do like it has been said and get a squat rack with an incline bench and some weights and dumbbells. It would be a great deal cheaper, but what I have is really nice if you want to spend the money. Your wife would like it also I would believe.
