About 3 months ago I would make 2 or 3 shakes a day at my house. They consisted of 2 cups milk, peanutbutter, 1 banana, 1 cup oatmeal, and some whey powder. They helped me put on some quality weight but they gave me awful gas. Does anyone know how to make a high calorie shake without oatmeal?

substitute the oatmeal for 1 cup of Total cereal. It tastes even better. I would use flax oil in place of the peanut butter. Its a healthier fat containing all the Omegas. Everything else looks a lot like what I do. I make these shakes when I am on the run or get up late and can't cook a real breakfast.

side note: Total is packed with vitamins and minerals. Its probably healthier then using oats. Benefit of oats would be the added fiber. I used to use Total but found that shopping at Sams club I can get like 10lbs of oats for $4 so I switched.

Are you sure it was the oats and not the Whey?

Yea, as soon as I stopped with the uncooked oats my gas went away.

I could totally debate this.

As far as flax in a shake, sure it's healthier but it tastes like ass and you will have to plug your nose to try and choke down that shake.

Ground flax seed has a nutty flavour though :) Hmmm what could you use for filler instead of the oats

never tried but wheatgerm maybe.... you could try oatbran and see if the result is less potent....Post Shredded Wheat (or wheat with Bran) cereal ground up (far as I know there's zero sugar and it's not milled...just whole grain wheat)

honestly if it wasn't the whey that gave you the gas, I would think that the next most likely suspect would have been the 2 cups of milk, not the oats, unless you have some allergic reaction specifically to oats.

Also, did you change anything else besides the oats? Mayeb used a different kind of whey at the same time that you stopped using the oats?

I know you said your gas went away when you removed the oats, but maybe it was more a combination of the milk/oats/whey than the oats themselves.

Just a thought...

i was thinking the same thing....any chance you changed brands of whey?

In terms of other grains you can use rolled barley or rye... There is also brown rice flakes... Natural baby cereal (which contains a number of grains and nothing else) may also be helpful. You could use cooked oatmeal too - just cook it up, let it cool and see if that is easier on your stomach.

For other things - depending on your preference for these types of things you could try some honey. It will add more carbs for you. Adding some cooked rice and pulsing that would be fine... Or you could get inventive and use some cooked sweet potato - it would make an interesting shake anyway (hey - I do know people who do it with white potato PWO!! :barf: )!

You could, if you really can not find anything, then just eat some carbs on the side while you drink a shake with other things in it.

Looking at the nutritional info on total next to my quaker oats its plain to see the cereal is only lacking in the fiber department. The oats have far less vitamins and minerals.

I personally like the taste of flax oil. Its a nutty flavor. I get the Barleans stuff and don't mind drinking it straight. So in a chocolate shake with a banana in it etc... there is almost no hint the oil is in there. Besides the flax oil is head and shoulders above peanut butter in nutrition.
