Horses Bled to Death in Turkey

Other Viewing Options

PETA has obtained undercover video footage showing horses violently dragged to the ground with ropes so that their necks can be slashed with a scalpel while they are completely conscious. Their blood is then collected and used in medical products.
Taken at Turkey's government-run Refik Saydam Hygiene Center (RSHC), the video captures shocking images of struggling horses whose blood is used in serum production. Workers bind the horses' legs closely to their bodies for restraint and sit on top of the struggling animals to hold them down. Moans of agony and shudders of pain reveal the horses to be fully conscious during the procedure, which sometimes lasts for hours. The horses are then left to bleed to death. Finally, their bodies are dragged outside and dumped beside the street.
This horse's legs are tightly bound with rope.

Humane Alternatives

In the United States and Europe, blood is collected from horses just as it's collected from human beings: A needle is inserted through the skin and into a vein. Horses stand comfortably in a stall during the procedure, and several liters of blood are collected without harming or killing the horses. It is nothing compared to the anguish experienced by the horses at the RSHC. The video reveals RSHC technicians who cannot or will not make a proper needle insertion and who instead crudely slash the horses' necks in order to expose the jugular vein. There is no excuse for this coarse and cruel technique. PETA wrote to RSHC officials to inform them that this horrific cruelty will not be tolerated.
Hazardous to Humans and Horses

The RSHC produces horse serum for the government as a cheap but dangerous substitute for human serum in medical products. The United States long ago used horse serum for rabies shots and other antitoxins until it was discovered that horse antibodies lead to a dangerous condition called "serum sickness" in 16 percent of patients. Today, horse blood is increasingly unnecessary for medical use in the U.S., but when it is needed, obtaining it is nothing like what happens in this house of horrors run by the Turkish government.
What You Can Do

1. Write to RSHC President Dr. Mustafa Ertek and ask him to stop these cruel procedures immediately:
Mustafa Ertek, M.D., President
Refik Saydam Hygiene Center
Cemal Gursel Caddesi, No. 18
06100 Sihhiye, Ankara
Turkey
mustafa.ertek@saglik.gov.tr
2. Write to Ahmet Necdet Sezer, the president of Turkey, and tell him that the Turkish government is failing to meet European animal protection standards:
His Excellency Ahmet Necdet Sezer
President of the Turkish Republic
Cankaya Kosku
Sehit Ersan Caddesi, No. 14
??ankaya, Ankara
Turkey
cumhurbaskanligi@tccb.gov.tr
3. Write to Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the prime minister of Turkey, and ask him to ensure that the Ministry of Health adheres to Turkey???s Animal Protection Law.
His Excellency Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic
Baþbakanlýk
Necatibey Cad., No. 108
Ankara
Turkey
bimer@basbakanlik.gov.tr
4. Please make an urgent donation to support our work for horses and other animals suffering in Turkey and around the world.

Speaking purely from a financial standpoint, wouldn't it be much wiser to keep the horses alive than to keep buying new ones? Cruel and stupid, not too good of a combo.

peta sometimes can bias information so they might best be listened to in as much the same way you would any other group of fanatics. i got a video once of the atrocities of the seal hunt. it showed the same exact seal get killed 15 times.... i haven't trusted those peta fukkers since. if it is so bad why not show at least two pieces of footage in a 90 minute tape? the video from ocean spray with the cranberries was far more graphic.

seriously peta never tells the whole story and an extremely small amount of money is ever spent by them to better the lives of any actual animals. it all gets poured into more shock video. like i'm against abortion should i spend millions making films about it or set up a home to take in unwanted children or donate money to educate people and distribute contraceptives? instead of going in there n filming why not set up a better system, show them how? set up an operation and provide the needed blood humanely?

please donate money to your local animal shelter not peta. peta will only use it to make more films.

True Story, I think we should nuke all the origanizations like PETA, and Green Peace. With the word "peace" in your name, you're clearly a threat to capitalism.

I would love to tie up any one of those assholes and skin him alive. I would laugh and spit all over his face and see how he fucking feels what it's like to struggle in extreme pain. Those people make me sick.

There you go foreman

7 Things You Didn't Know About PETA

1) PETA president and co-founder Ingrid Newkirk has described her group’s overall goal as “total animal liberation.” This means no meat, no milk, no zoos, no circuses, no wool, no leather, no hunting, no fishing, and no pets (not even seeing-eye dogs). PETA is also against all medical research that requires the use of animals.
2) Despite its constant moralizing about the “unethical” treatment of animals by restaurant owners, grocers, farmers, scientists, anglers, and countless other Americans, PETA has killed over 10,000 dogs and cats at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. During 2003, PETA put to death over 85 percent of the animals it collected from members of the public.

3) PETA has given tens of thousands of dollars to convicted arsonists and other violent criminals. This includes a 2001 donation of $1,500 to the North American Earth Liberation Front (ELF), an FBI-certified “domestic terrorist” group responsible for dozens of firebombs and death threats. During the 1990s, PETA paid $70,200 to an Animal Liberation Front (ALF) activist convicted of burning down a Michigan State University research laboratory. In his sentencing recommendation, a federal prosecutor implicated PETA president Ingrid Newkirk in that crime. And PETA vegetarian campaign coordinator Bruce Friedrich told an animal rights convention in 2001 that “blowing stuff up and smashing windows” is “a great way to bring about animal liberation.”

4) PETA activists regularly target children as young as six years old with anti-meat and anti-milk propaganda, often waiting outside their schools to intercept them as they walk to and from class-without notifying parents. One piece of kid-targeted PETA literature tells small children: “Your Mommy Kills Animals!” PETA brags that its messages reach over 2 million children every year, including thousands reached by e-mail without the permission of their parents. One PETA vice president told the Fox News Channel’s audience: “Our campaigns are always geared towards children, and they always will be.”

5) PETA has used a related organization, the PETA Foundation, to fund the misnamed Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a deceptive animal rights group that promotes itself as an unbiased source of medical and nutritional information. PCRM's president also serves as president of the PETA Foundation.

6) PETA runs campaigns seemingly calculated to offend religious believers. One entire PETA website is devoted to the claim-despite ample evidence to the contrary-that Jesus Christ was a vegetarian. PETA holds protests at houses of worship, even suing one church that tried to protect its members from Sunday-morning harassment. Its billboards taunt Christians with the message that hogs “died for their sins.” PETA insists, contrary to centuries of rabbinical teaching, that the Jewish ritual of kosher slaughter shouldn't be allowed. And its infamous “Holocaust on Your Plate” campaign crassly compares the Jewish victims of Nazi genocide with farm animals.

7) PETA has repeatedly attacked research foundations like the March of Dimes, the Pediatric AIDS Foundation, and the American Cancer Society, because they support animal-based research that might uncover cures for birth defects and life-threatening diseases. PETA president Ingrid Newkirk has said that “even if animal research resulted in a cure for AIDS, we would be against it.”

To want to torture a human to death just because you think they don't do their job well is pure evil.

It would be better that you want to kill the humans who torture animals rather than the ones who try to save them.

peta kills animals. they kill perfectly healthy adoptable pets because one of their goals is to not have any animals kept as pets.

i like pets and i love to fish... i'd like to catch one of those peta assholes on a hook. preferably one of the idiots that promised to find a dog a nice home then killed it n tossed it in a dumpster. i'd hook out their eyes n say in my best seinfeld soup nazi voice "no dog for you!"

I love animals. If I thought about it much I'd probably be a vegetarian...so I won't! I hate to see animals caged for our amusement as well. Although I do admit being amused... However I feel sorrow for them. IMO animals are a life to be respected just like a humans... The way you treat an animal says a lot about you. I didn't watch the clip because I hate that shit, but I imagine it would only upset me. Do I believe all dogs go to Heaven? No, not all, but they have a better chance than most humans...

PETA kills animals. By the thousands.

From July 1998 through the end of 2005, PETA killed over 14,400 dogs, cats, and other "companion animals" -- at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. That's more than five defenseless animals every day. Not counting the dogs and cats PETA spayed and neutered, the group put to death over 90 percent of the animals it took in during 2005 alone. And its angel-of-death pattern shows no sign of changing.

Year Received??? Adopted Killed Transferred % Killed % Adopted
2005 2,145 146 1,946 69 90.7 6.8
2004 2,640 361 2,278 1 86.3 13.7
2003 2,224 312 1,911 1 85.9 14.0
2002 2,680 382 2,298 2 85.7 14.3
2001 2,685 703 1,944 14 72.4 26.2
2000 2,684 624 2,029 28 75.6 23.2
1999 1,805 386 1,328 91 73.6 21.4
* 1998 943 133 685 125 72.6 14.1
Total 17,806 3,047 14,419 331 80.1 17.1

who's your daddy baby? :)
One web site is not proof. Who funds that site??

peta does not dipute the statements made here it defends them by saying they would be a no kill shelter if it were cheaper to feed them than kill them.

other shelters have an 80% success of placement of animals. it is simple peta's goal is to eliminate the keeping of animals as pets. they would rather kill than place them. that is why i say they are fanatics. they are so foaming at the mouth screaming their spiel they forgot about the animals. they're wacko. try talking to a few of them. they are usually not too hard to find.

In the early hours of June 15, 2005, two employees of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) were arrested in Ahoskie, North Carolina, and charged with 31 felony counts of cruelty to animals. A Grand Jury later indicted each defendant on 22 counts of Animal Cruelty and 3 counts of Obtaining Property By False Pretenses. PETA employees Andrew Cook and Adria Hinkle are expected to face a trial in Hertford County (NC) Superior Court in May 2006. A few days after the arrests, local authorities told Greenville, North Carolina's WNCT-TV News that they had found more than 70 additional dead animals that may be connected to PETA.

i doubt whoever is funding the site paid to frame these losers.

ps you can read some of the indictments at the site.

Again one site is not proof. In a perfect world no kill shelters would be all the rage......but humans would rather spend money on cloths, booze, porn and other worthless things than helping anyone or anything, so PETA dose not have the money to shelter the entire worlds population of animals. Better to kill them humanily then let them be tortured to death. ;)

#40.

most shelters kill reluctantly not because their main objective is to eliminate pets altogether.

Most shelters kill on schedule. Their objective is to be as humane as the $$$ allows.
