how important is a supplement

my question is how important is a supplement. do we need it to build our muscles.. or just normal food wont do it?
does supplements have sides effects? thats y i am afraid to take any... if i am wrong what are the supplements that u recommend.
 
Normal food is far more important
 
supplements are just that. they are ment to be in addition to normal healthy eating habits, and when someone is seriously training they find themselves in need of extra help in certain areas that they are difficient in from their diet due to the extra stress placed on the body.

each supp has its goods and bads and there are way to many to list in one thread. get yourself a good healthy diet with what you need then add a protien shake. anything past that you need to do a lot of reading to find out. you cant get an easy answer from such an ambiguous question such as this thread
 
I feel that from an athletic or bodybuilding standpoint there are a few supplements that are very important:

-multi vitamin
-EFA's
-extra protein (i.e. whey)

It is very difficult to get adequate amounts of the above from food alone.

All other supplements have their place and purpose, but they are just supplements.

I would say....eat right and dont bother with any supplements. IF you decide to get real serious THEN maybe find the supplements that are right for you that dont scare you. The "recreational" weightlifter will only see minimal gains regardless of the supplements they take if their diet is well rounded.
 
EFA = Essential Fatty Acids

Omega 3 and Omega 6 types. Commonly found in Fish Oils and Flax Oils.
 
what do u mean the right food. does it mean that i need to take 6 meals per day. or what are the essential things that i need to intake in order to gain more muscles and reduce fats( calestrol level)
 
Ive heard the top 3 supplements to get are...

1) Multi Vitamin
2) Whey Protein
3) Creatine

What do EFAs do exactly?
