I constantly get asked this question, and would like to know for myself...is there a certain amount of time you should after eating to go workout? i hear 1 hour, then i hear 2 hours, then i hear eat a small snack 30min before...what is it?????

should we eat meals 1-2 hrs before, or a small snack???

and is there certain foods (like a pre w.o. protein shake or something) that you should eat before hand?

As with everything you are going to get different opinions on this subject. It really is personal preference. I usually eat some whey and oatmeal 30-45 before. The slower the digesting the longer you can wait but the faster digesting you should sooner. Some people also use malto/dextorse immediatley before. Again personal preference.

personally i have oats/ solid protein foods an hour before.
im still full if its only 30 mins-45.. but i notice if i wait two hours, somehow i am always more tired. perhaps this is b/c the carbs been used, don't know.

i'm no expert on the subject but i really don't think it matters... as long as it's within an hour or so after eating i think you're good... today for instance, i had a tuna sandwich, some celery and went straight to the gym and my energy levels were fine... had i have waited an hour or so i don't think it would've made much difference...

It is different for everyone and it does depend on what you eat.

Nowadays I bracket my workouts with whey and dextrose 15 minutes before training and immediately after. It is extremely easily digested.

When I was 17 and trying to gain weight I had no problem eating a quarter pounder with cheese and fries 10 minutes before training and I made some of the best gains of my life that way.

i know...i'm mostly concerned with how full i feel...

say i wake up at 10am, and eat breakfast (5or 6 eggs whites, bagel, oatmeal and 2 cups skim milk to drink). i'm full for like 2 hours....should i eat something smaller (say just oatmeal and maybe a shake), then eat a huge "breakfast" when i get back around noon?

Cut out the damn bagel man. Add an extra serving of oatmael or something. Try waking up a little earlier and throwing down a whey shake and then fix your breakfast about an hour later. This may require you getting your lazy ass up before 10:00 though. lol

As for before w/o meal...it varies. Sometimes I will have whey with malto both before and after. Other times I will have tuna and 1 or 2 apples about 30-40 minutes before. Sometimes it depends what I'm working that day too. If I'm working legs, I do not want anything sitting on my stomach.

why cut out the bagel...i need carbs, carbs, maaaad f*ckin carbs haha

10am was just an example, that's usually my weekend wake up time....its 8 during the week (i'm in college man, gotta sleep on the weekend haha)

where does everyone get malto and dextrose?? i ask people at gnc/vitamin shop etc. and they have no idea what it even is....

The bagel is ok, it just sounds like you are eating too much, that's why you feel full. Just pick one carb source, either the bagel or the oatmeal.

I get dextrose in my Creatine HSC (made by AST).

thanks nattyguy,

i ask those guys at gnc/'vitamin shoppe and i mine as well be speaking chinese.

so they don't come by themselves right? you gotta buy them in creatine etc....

I prefer eating oats or legumes or ww pasta or brown rice with lean meat or fish and hit gym after 1.5.If for some reason I don't have enough time,I eat a higher GI carb, like bread or white rice or some cereal and hit gym after 30-60 mins.

Also a good optionto give your more energy if bulking is to have a low GI carb+protein meal 1-1.5 hour before training and a small shake of whey/dextrose/malto between sets

thanks for the advice NG

If you have problems with energy I'd say the best thing to do is drink a sports drink half an hour before hand. I recomend G-Push because it is made with galactose which takes longer to break down and is really low in calories

My meals are very small but generally 45 minutes for me.
