I'm 22 6'4 224 tryin to loose a little around the waist but gain muscle. I'm on like a low carb diet i guess. I lift like 4 times a week when i get to the gym i start with 10 min on the eliptical and get my heart rate past the suggested cardio rate but at 10 min my right foot is numb so i go lift then i get on it for another 10 min walk the numb off and do it again. how much cardio should i be doing to loose about 15 pounds? thanks

Losing weight is moreso about calories in versus calories out than anything else. Nobody is going to say "You need to do an hour on the bike and then you'll lose the weight you want to lose!" It's just not like that.

Spit out your diet, spit out your routine, etc. and maybe I can help.

Do some cardio to get a general warm up going. I prefer to do cardio on my off days from lifting, it seems to help me recover better, those days i also stretch very thoroughly and do stuff like SMR (self myofascial release) etc.

Nothing is set in stone with cardio, depending on your diet you may need as little as once a week or maybe 3-4x/week. Start off slow and increase your time/frequency as you adapt to the stimulus. When i started regularly doing cardio i would run a mile and be dying. Now i run an easy mile to warm up before getting on with sprints or the stairmaster.

There is no prerequisite amount of cardio that you must do to lose weight. As soxmuscle said, you have to worry about calories in versus calories out. However, I must say, I have seen much better results in those who do some type of exercise most days of the week and consequently can get away with eating more calories.

I like to do some type of cardio 3 days per week for health reasons, but I also keep to specific rest intervals when weight training so there is a cardiovascular stimulus provided during my weight workout sometimes too.

Also, you should get that foot checked out by a doctor. It shouldn't just be going numb randomly when you do cardio...

I agree with Yanick when he recommends doing cardio on the days that you don't hit the weights. Sometimes I find myself hopping on the bike for a while after my workout but for the most part, performing your cardio on non-weight training days allows for faster recovery, more flexibility and a better overall physique.
