How much Glutamine? etc..

Im wondering how much glutamine to take, Ive only been taking 500 mg. And, do I take the glutamine on my off days?

Im also taking:

Multivitamin
Calcium
Creatine
Chromium Picolinate
and soon to be trying pyruvate as well.

I eat a good diet and also whey.

Am I missing anything?
 
I take 500mg three times a day.

Why pyruvate? You probably don't need additional calcium if you have dairy products AND your multi.
 
Cool, Ill bump up the glutamine.

I dont take in much dairy due to the carbs..im trying to keep my carb intake to under 50 grams a day to try to lose some weight. I love drinking milk but at 13g carbs per serving its a bit high.

The pyruvate seemed like a good suppliment to lose weight and increase lean according to "The ultimate guide to bodybuilders nutrition" by ironman magazine and Peter Sisco.

Ive decreased my calories by 500 per day..lift and lots of cardio. It goes against most bodybuilding information ive read to gain muscle and lose weight. Just trying everything i can to make it happen.
 
You can't gain muscle and lose weight. You gain muscle when you have an excess of calories that your body can process and use the nutrients from, therefore building muscle size. To lose weight, you have to take in a negative amount of calories compared to what you burn. That's why you'll hear all of us regulars talk about whether we're "Bulking" or "Cutting." Two completely different phases, you're in one or the other.
 
Yeah, thats what got me sold on the pyruvate..i guess its a pipedream.
 
If it sounds too good to be true with fitness, it is. Doesn't mean it can't "help" but nothing is a miracle, nothing will change what can and can't be done with the body.
 
Yep :-) Im one dedicated mofo though, Ill get my goals accomplished in time. A little snakeoil would have helped, but sweat and iron will get the job done! Ill build my endurance and strength while obliterating the excess fat. Then ill go a couple hundred calories over my burned per day and begin the bulking.

I used to consume three table spoons of glutamine per day...I think it ended up being around 30 something or 40ish grams per day....I stopped taking it only due to costs and trying to save money. I think it helped a lot with workout recovery.
 
Yep, thats where i bought my glutamine and creatine, the buy one get two free deal rocks.

Dang, how many sites do they have? I bought them off of www.puritan.com it turns out, I checked my favorites list. I saw there logo on vitamins.com and figured it was the same site....Ill add puritanspride.com and compare before i buy next time.
 
I usually get the ON 1000 grams for like 40 bucks I think...or maybe its less I don't remember cause its been a bit since I used it. Its the largest container like 2lbs.
 
I checked out puritans pride cause I get a lot of stuff from there such as my multivitamin, and their glumamine is WAY over priced...and the 500mg tabs are so low of a dose I would have to eat like 50 of them a day....I think the ON glutamine jug is the best deal on glutamine out there.
 
Glutamine is waste of money IMO. Most of it is destroyed in your gut and what passes through has little effect on athletic performance. You're better off spending the money on whey.
 
Your body's intramuscular stores of glutamine are lowered after a workout. Its essential for the proper use of protein. More Glutamine is goooood stuff.

A post workout whey protein shake has sufficent glutamine and is a much more balanced source. Taking glutamine as stand alone supplement has some minor GI benefits, but that's about it. I've posted a ton of studies in the forum showing how ineffective glutamine supplementation is.
 
So, your saying the pill form is not as good a carrier as a whey powder enriched with glutamine? Id like to read up on your studies, thats pretty intresting, got a link?

The whey protein powder i have now contains no glutamine however. If your right about this id gladly switch over to a fortified shake.
 
I didn't mention anything relating to pill form, my point is a lot of whey formulas have plenty of glutamine/glutamic acid in them. As an example I usually take a custom isolate whey blend from TP, approximately 21% of the ion-exchange formula is glutamine/Glutamic Acid - see here - http://www.trueprotein.com/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=65

Do an advanced search for glutamine by my user name and you'll find a number of studies.
 
Glutamic Acid is converted by the body into glutamine. If you feel ingesting large quantities of l-glutamine (which is mostly destroyed by the gut) is good use of money go ahead.

Dang that other post rocked, I learned a ton. I did a "how much Glutamine" search before i started this post, i should have entered "Glutamine".

Anyways, Im pretty much sold on Glutamine redspy... especially after reading the other post...

Im a bit confused on how much to take still...it varies from 1.5 g a day to 15 grams! Thats 30 pills a day!

Ill take 5 500mg 3x a day ---- (7.5 grams a day) until i run out of pills then switch to powder.
 
Volume your better off getting the ON glutamine powder so you can take larger quantity....like red spy said most of its destroyed and I believe that is why they are finding studys to show that more is better....I was taking a TON of it...I wouldn't take it if I wasn't on at least 25g per day.
 
Sweet, im all over it...but i bought 6 bottles of the pill form, so ill down that first.
