It all depends on your intensity in the gym. Some guys can hit the gym hard for 45 minutes and get a great workout in. All depends on your conditioning and the look you are going after. What you are training for. All comes down to that really. For example a guy who's goal is to compete will sometimes put two sessions in per day. This question is tough to answer.
But in my opinion and from what I have read, an hour per day is a good goal. 20 minutes of cardio following 40 minutes of lifting.
Also remember that you must also include a healthy diet along with the time spent in the gym. So technically every hour of every single day must be focused on improving your physique. If you are not lifting you are making sure to eat right and think of ways to improve your body.
