Can someone give me a step by step for tanning in a contest. I am new to this and need to know what to do and what products work. I am fair skinned if that helps.

start off by getting yourself a decent base... tanning beds a few times a week is a good start.

definitely agree. :thumb: every competition tanning product looks MUCH better on a good base tan.

Ive seen competitors who have had a natural base prior to application of competing tanning products and those that have not.. (ie pale prior). having a good base just looks SOOO much better!!

I got a spray tan, and put Pro-Tan on top. The one judge I know said afterwards I had very good colour. I'm Canadian, of Northern European extraction, so I'm pretty much naturally bluish-white -- but for the same reason, I didn't really feel comfortable about frying my cells in a tanning bed.

Everybody I've seen painted up for bodybuilding looks weird and unnatural anyway, base tan or not. It's more important, in my opinion, to get the tanning stain on nice and even. I've seen some really vile-looking blotchy jobs. (Hint: get someone else to do it for you.)

I must admit, though, that progress photos look a lot more encouraging if you've got a base tan.

I asgree with the base tan. I tanned for awhile before my contest in a tanning salon. Then I used pro-tan starting the thurs. before my show.

try taking L-Tyrosine, since ive been taking it ive stopped burning and ive gotten allot darker ..L-Tyrosine i reads helps the glands and also is a precursor to melanin

Canadian comps outlaw dream tan. I was at a show last weekend, and two guys were kicked offstage to towel it off. It did give a nice effect.

I think this "darker the better" thing is something of a bodybuilding myth, anyway. It's just stage makeup, people. Yes, you need to be a bit darker and bolder, but you don't need to be invisible on a dark night. Specially with the relatively crappy and uncomplicated stage lighting which is the norm for most shows.

Just my personal opinion, I'd rather see more attention paid to the quality of the colour. People with darker and lighter tans can both look good onstage (as long as they don't get crazy with the oil, which is another killer of definition), but some people are such a peculiar shade of yellowish or greenish brown that they look like they're carrying some rare tropical illness.

were you needing the exact steps to reach the right color and how to apply the stuff? Protan I assume?

atherjen: is there anything you don't know? ;)

just a note Tanning like in a tanning bed helps fight razoor bumps "folliculitis"

I wish i had that.... :(

I am getting waxed on Tues, i have been tanning at a solarium (vertical one) 3x's a week for the last 4 weeks and used an accelerator about 6x's it has taken alot to get any tan up at all..... although i have pretty good color now.
I am using "contest color" stain that i am gonna paint on with a sponge roller brush, 1 coat Wed, 2 on Thursday, 1 friday and 1-2 Saturday depending on how it looks.
Shouldn't have to use anything alse after that or maybe just some dreamtan on the face and hands :)

Where did you hear this
I am a Canadian competitor and the standard tanning prep in all the contests I've entered seems to be 2 - 3 layers of Pro Tan followed by Dream Tan.
A lot of contests ban the use of oil.

This is my tanning system.

6 weeks out or earlier start tanning beds to obtain a good base.
On the Thursday night prior to contest shave and loofah bod.
Have someone apply the first coat of Pro Tan, there are a few different ways to apply the stuff, I find pouring some into a metal or glass bowl and then having it brushed on with the sponge applicator seems to be the easiest. I usually pick up a couple of spare sponge applicators from the hardware store, it's handy to have a dry one for blending. Allow some time for the application especially if it's your (or the person applying it) first time applying the stuff... you'll find your groove with it after a few goes. I think it took me about 45 minutes to do one coat first time around now it takes about 20 - 25 minutes. Apply the Pro Tan liberally it should go on looking like coke... I've seen many people blend it so much that they end up not being dark enough and require even more coats. Overnight your colour will darken up. Do NOT put Pro Tan on your face! Pro Tan takes a while to dry so start early in the evening. I find I can speed up the process with the use of a warm hairdryer. Be warned this shit comes off on everything so old bed linen, towels and old baggy clothes are a must... I also have baby wipes handy for wiping down the toilet seat... like I said this stuff comes off on everything! (Including partners who sleep in the same bed! lol)
Fri morning shower off lightly and pat dry, (you're not trying to get clean here this is just to help blend the Pro Tan). Apply second coat. Fri night you can assess for yourself if you require a third coat, if you do, again shower and apply third coat, if not do not shower any more prior to competition.
Sat morn (contest day) apply Dream Tan (I use the brown-bronze) backstage with an open hand much like a moisturizer, it's a thick product and blends easily... this stuff is great for covering up any irregularities in your Pro Tan tan, I say apply back stage because Dream Tan never actually dries. Dream Tan can be used on the face... I mix mine with a foundation shade to get the desired colour, face should be slightly lighter than the body in colour.

Hope this helps. :thumb:

Pretty much how I do it too, except I do all Protan and no Dream Tan. I use a darker foundation on my face with a darker powder. This next comp., I am trying Olympic Tan. Curious to see how it turns out.

Let me know JLB, especially if it's easier and less messy!

I found it on BBing.com for $10 plus shipping. It was on sale! I've been reading really good things about it. Requires maybe two coats, smells better, but still a pain in the butt to get off you. It's a Mousse type stuff.

Buy two. Better to have more than you need. If your doing bbing, you'll need at least three coats if not more. Craig and I used a bottle between the two of us.

That's what I do. I'm fair skin, and going out to the beach or pool for hours would not do the job. I would end up looking like a lobster.

Use the dream tan on your head NOT the Pro Tan or you will look VERY odd when it starts to come off. Pro Tan is like a stain and takes time to come off... often in a very patchy snake skin like manner, not pretty! Dream Tan washes off.
