Anyone know much about identity theft? My bank was hacked today, and I was taken for a phishing scam. The normal page came up & I logged in (the bank has the usernames set to our SS#) & I didn't realize until afterwards that I just sent my SS# & password to someone in Madrid.

I called the bank & they admitted they had been hacked & had shut down their website. They changed my username & password. I then called transunion & put a fraud alert on my credit report.

Bottom line is, how worried should I be? They shouldn't have my name/address/etc.. just my SS#. Can they do much of anything with that alone?

What sucks is I'm the most paranoid person when it comes to identity theft. I shred every piece of mail, everything with my name on it.

With the access to your SS# you are somewhat open at that bank, but the bank is inside of the issue and will help you be proactive. You are most likely not the biggest fish they reeled in though and now that you and the bank are being proactive about this your vulerability is nill. They didn't get your other data so you aren't really at risk ... i.e. bank cards with pin numbers, investment information and like that. With just a SS# there isn't much damage they can do to you ... hell Busy anyone can get your social and your drivers license numbers off of the internet in less than 10 min's with nothiung but your real name and a general idea of where you live. A full credit report takes a little longer ... but it's out there too. Keep in front of the issues like you are now and you'll be fine.

Typically the bad guys hit the banks before a long weekend so they have more time to clean people out with their little scams before the banks open on Tuesday ... but you caught them in motion and have now locked them out of your vast fincancial empire (we know you are hangin' with Trump Busy).

If you use more than one bank then shut this one down totally .. as in move all funds into another bank and dump these guys if you can. Their system shouldn't have been vulnerable to hackers ... they deserve to get fired.

I'm still waiting to see if I am one of the affected veterans whose information was stolen from that jackass analyst who illegaly took files from the Dept of Vet Affairs.

They won't tell me if I was affected. All they say is, "Watch your credit report for suspicious activity".

Fucking great....

Get a written statment from the bank saying they messed it up. So you can blame them if something happens later.

as far as the bank account goes, that was the least of my worries. I was more concerned about future problems with credit, as I'm actually house hunting now and the last thing I want is this crap coming back & bite me. I will be closing this account tomorrow.

Anyway, thanks for the advice.

I plan on doing something like this tomorrow when I go there to close my account.:thumb:

Maybe convince them to give me an interest free home loan.:bulb:

problem is that if someone had found the flaw in their system earlier and had reported it they could have been labled as a hacker and possibly jailed. That's the fucked up thing is that the law doesn't distinguish between whitehat and blackhat.

As of right now, no. But aparently congress is debating on releasing funds to cover any monitoring service. Until that happens, it's my dime on the line.

So, they fuck up, and you have to waste your time watching out for the consequences of their fuck up...Great.
