If you died today would you go to heaven or hell?

You are soooo wrong you do not even know what right is. Religion is the word of God ... supposedly ... not opinion. Contemporary religious knowledge comes from the study of the Bible, the Qu'ran, the Torah, the Old Testament, the dead sea scrolls and so on not what you read in an internet forum or heard f. When I say "instead of knowledge" I mean that you have substituted that study with "Yes, some. I have mostly studied my own thoughts and learned the wisdom of others though". What you have is OPINION ... not knowledge. This is not even debatable Brach ... it is fact. Study religion so that you can then have an informed opinion based on religiously ordained canonized "knowledge".

I never studied scripture, I studied historical events that shaped religious history. I wanted to know what really happened to create the religious institutions of today. Why do Muslims hate Jews? Why do Christians feel they are morally superior in their positions on issues of ethical jurisprudence? That shit bothered me so I made a point of finding out ... you should too.

While studying religious history I also learned some things from the various religious texts just from exposure. If this thread goes there I'll continue ...

NO dude because the Bible is NOT God's words...its man's words interpretation of God. You really think men could fully understand and comprehend God??

Hell No. So all these other Bible-wannabee's are also based on opinion. THe opinion of the men who interpreted and wrote what they THOUGHT their God wanted.

SO yes, it is based on opinion like I said.

Ahhh man now ya had to go and fuck up what would have been a good debate.

You need to think your position through way more before you hit the submit button Brach.

Obviously God did (IF you believe that He exists at all).

You think God ... the omnipotent omniscient all seeing God wouldn't gage the mental capacity of his own creation, and then sort out at what level he should then word Himself as he lays it all out? Think He could somehow work that out so He could get His message across?

Think your shit out a little ... this could be a fun debate in which you and I learn something. Or not ...

I dont know.. but I like the thought that what ever you do the whole forgiveness concept means that as long as onne person thinks sommething good about you - you weren't so bad.. even if you were by evveryone else's standards.. I was raised a catholic and am now a buddhist.. seems both usually have you covered one way or other.. One because youre just a pathetic didn't know any better poor looser wretch and the other just because what ever you thought was fair enough we're going to find some innocence in it for you anyway...

I quite dig too what Brach last said.. and agree somewhat.. if you can re-read all that shit in all those holy books and throw a conversaational or even wryy humorous "check this out / check them out..ahh gotto love em trying ..the poor lambs " tone on what you're reading ( like for the revelations chapters for exmaple )so much as a looming and oh serious you're in big trouble mate fire and briomstone alll round no parole no beer no love for youu vibe over the tONe of the words and stories.. then you might just arrive at a whole other conclusion.. ppl are waaay too serious!!!..

I also agree with IanDaniel.. if nothing else.. I knOww I'm going down.. 6 ft under down.. and after the worms do their thing on whatever's left of me after science takes what they want, I 'll become part of the soil goodies your greatgrandkids fooood or oxygen giving foliage grows out of.. sick ..isn't it.. I wonder how many generations of whom wee're eating and breathing these days????.. dust to dust huh;)

P.s. if this post offends anyone, i am to be taken as sick and you shouldn't let it disturb you...except that I'm not.:D.

and if anyone ellse is going to hell.. then I guess I am aswell. . how bad arre their asses anyway???.. and whotf saiid so??

No my problem is not with those who have actually researched and spent many countless hours thinking and pondering over it as I have.

If you can simply not perceive that such a being can exist. Then fine.

But it's arrogant assholes who think they are so damn smart because
they "see the truth" that piss me off.

So many atheists think they have "the answer". But really they don't know shit. And most of the time they know nothing about religion or anything in regards to a pantheon.

I have dwelled in meditation and held long conversations with others who have done the same many times. And no intelligent person that I have ever met, has come to the conclusion that nothing more exists.

It's funny how closed-minded people are. Hell you think this is all real?

We don't know shit. We know less than a billionth of the knowledge that could be gained just about our own planet let alone the solar system and beyond.

Hey, go fuck yourself.

So im arrogant for being an Atheist now? Man, i was arrogant when i was a Christian too as i recall. Im an arrogant person by nature.

But what you probably see as arrogance, i see as pride in who i am. Pride that allows me to be happy with my lack of belief, and open to other people's ideas.

Sure we dont know shit in relation to the universe, but we NEVER WILL. The universe is an infinite place, and things we knew about our tiny little planet a few hundred years ago are being found to be inaccurate these days.

Why should ultimate knowledge of life, the universe, and everything be a pre-requisite for any opinion on religion or philosophy?

I dont think i have "the answer", you patronising little shit. I think what i think because thats the way it is. Thats the decision i came to years ago when i made it, and its the opinion i still hold today after nearly a decade of reading on the subject.

Have i ever come across as having "the answer"? Did i even fucking SAY i had any answers to any question other than "What do you think about this?" ?

No, no i didnt.

It seems like you somehow assume that i HAVENT done "countless hours" of research on the subject aswell? What, so youre the only one with a thirst for knowledge and a fucking library card? Shit. Ive been reading before i could even write my own name properly, i can handle a theology library alright.

And, yeah. I do think im intelligent, unlike you i dont jump to biased conclusions about people based on their religious beliefs. Thats a step away from a terrorist idea.

There is no cool buzzword label for my beliefs. I don't believe in God. I believe in a creator. That creator has never popped in to say hello. The creator has never asked anything of me, so I don't ask anything of my creator anymore. Its a fair deal we have going.

KELJU THIS IS YOUR CREATOR SPEAKING!

its good to see such a topic being discussed as strongly as this is. All too often, you see people not displaying pride in their beliefs; be it atheist, strongly disciplined or whatever floats your boat. It puts my faith back in humanity as a whole. Unfortunately, I feel we as a society have put god and the whole religion thing on the back burner to hustle onto our very busy lives. I'm guilty of this as well. My point is this is what makes us human. Perhaps if we were to go back to getting on touch with our inner selves we wouldnt fight or be as cruel towards each other.

As for the feeling you get after going to church, I really have to say that it is amazing feeling. I get it after I go to church (as seldom as that is) and after going to the gym for two hours. I wonder if there is some type of connection.

My wife goes to church pretty much every week. I am a C+E, and the only reason I do this is to keep her happy. The only feeling I get from going to church is the urge to fall asleep.

The wife doesn't like when I go cause I always make fun of things. Especially during xmas calling Jesus a bastard child and such. Ah it is all in fun :p

Sitting through church is a mental workout. When I was younger I always felt great after church, because it was fucking over, and I wouldn't have to go back for another week. Woohoo!

Fuck. That fucker didn't do it eh.

Oh brother... we need to chat.

This post is funny.. I nearly spat my drink on my screen when I read it the first time..
the funny part of it though is that , while I get and I agree with what both of you say, .. somewhat or other..to me on the outside of that between you both looking in, you both imagined swipes on each other that never even happened and you both then reacted defensively like you were just attacked!!..
Brach did nOt saay that you specifically were arrogant.. he made a generalisation about "so many" and you took it that the comment was directed at or about youu!??!.. thaat is what makes great terrorism war wagons ... generalisations and missing the point of what was being said ..

p.s. buddhits are atheists aswell and freely admit we don't know shit!.. although don't quote us on it because we just may-do after all...make up your own mind.

oh and jesus as a bastard child??!!.. LOL :).. aand a vagrant and wine pusher in almost evvery single reported story of him being with ppl !..particulary when preaching or aiding.. lol.. you should mee at church with my folks on the blue moon that thaat happens:D!.. ooh .. and when the preist gets all theatric and dramatic ly poetic.. lol..too much fun:).. some ppl are just too serious to hear what's happening... shame they miss it really.

nahhh...I think it more or less makes me feel that things have hope. I'm an optimist. Afterall, youre talking to a guy who lost his wife through divorce, courted her again-not giving up and got the girl back.

I work with 3 Buddhist at work. They are so fucking cool. They have taught me a lot. One guy is president of a Tibetan Society that is responsible for getting the monks out of Tibet before the Chinese kill them all. The other guy is a member of that society and he lives in a Yeart on a farm. He has no power or water. He milks goats every morning before he comes to work at the antique shop. The guy is brilliant too. HE was an engineer that decided to leave all of his worldly responsibilities, and just life off of the land. Thats coo l with me cause he brings me fresh goat milk every other morning. Goat milk is the shit by the way.

I got to meet one of the Monks in person when he came to our shop on Thursday. The owner of the shop is a gay Buddhists, and a cool person. Every Thursday night, after the shop closes, Buddhist come to the shop and the smoke sage, and chant for hours or meditate. I have sit with them before. It was pretty boring. They chant for 30 minutes, then they meditate.

If you want to see some of the Monks they life here, check out this site.
The Fairhope Tibetan Society

Its funny, because I am a greedy atheist, and they are all about helping others and being kind. We share beliefs all of the time and have great conversations. I have been beat a few times but I have beet the ma few times. It really is greta conversation.

This crosses my mine everytime I do something dangerous. A lot of people dont even ask themselves this question at all, even though their Christian blah blah blah.

Neither...

Both are a figment of peoples imaginations -

yah.. I dont know that it's buddhists are cool as a genralisation so much as just that ppl are..
and leaving worldly possesions behind to pursue a life of simplicity and virtually no resource is half glamourised and b.s.'d into ppl's head anyway.. ppl just want to be comftable really and share it with someone sometimes usually is more likely what I believe .. whatever that looks like or means from person to person...
... I don't really want to get tooo much into it right this moment anyway really so .. glad you think you have some cool ppl to hang out with.. just remember to make your owwn mind up about what makes you feel good and makes sense though.. I 'm not homophobic and have some otherwise prtetty cool gay friends myself, but imo, gay is just hurt.. be careful who's head or 'peace' you let yourself be guided by;).

Yea I never know what she's talking about.

I get pieces and hints, but that's it.

Don't take it personally Lotus.

At least you don't substitue the letter "n" for the word "and". *points at LW*

That really annoys me.
