Man they don't play when it comes to business card etiquette. I met the President of Kyocera Solar Corp and before I could say hello he dashed off to his car to get his business cards and then nervously opened his holder and handed me his and didn't release it until he had mine in hand. Then he read the whole thing front and back and then placed it in his holder. I remembered in that movie Gung Ho where Michael Keaton meets all of those Japanese men and they have the Business card orgy. I can really imagine how it is now.

Are you by any chance hugely intimidating, or a major CEO, CFO, etc?

Hell no, I think he was embarassed that he forgot his business cards. I thought it was funny to have the head of a huge corporation scrambling to make a formal introduction with me.:D

This is quite common and it's also a cultural thing.

It's also good to take someone's business card, hold it with both hands, and read it (or pretend to read it) for about 4 to 5 seconds.

In Asia, everybody, I mean, everybody has a card.

I have a personal card with my name and email and phone number, and I have nother professional card for my job.

People save business cards and will refer to them, and refer you to other people. So for business and networks, business cards do help.

I love it...

I used to eat at a sushi place where all the employees were
hardcore Japanese, and it was always a quiet pleasant experience

Checkout the scene in American Psycho - Patrick Bateman is obsessive with them. Great film.

I vaguely remember reading something on a business womans visit to Japan and their business etiquette that cost her company a contract due to her faux paus. I suppose it would be likened to not wanting to shake hands here in the US.
