Who the fuck are they?

I remember watching a Sam Kineson(sp?) stand up and he pointed out that most of the rappers cant play any instruments.

I mean, there is some rap I like, but its only cuz its catchy. The beats are almost ALL the same. No instruments. And to top it off, the lyrics or background music is copied from some past artist.

Every Breath You Take?
Bad Boys?
Fuck even Mc Hammer's song was a copy.

Not much for originality. Of course, now the new idea is to take a popular song and "remix" it.

Are you kidding me? all the beats sound the same? You must be just listening to radio trash. They don't play good most rap on the radio, and yes, I could understand where you're coming from if that's all you've heard.

It is common to take people's beats, or rap over a popular song. The beat is hot, why not jazz it up? How long have bands been doing covers of other songs?

To say all the beats are the same either shows you dont know how to critique music, or you haven't been exposed enough styles.

You don't have to like rap, but it sounds more like you just haven't had someone who really was into it show you some good shit.

Go listen to Diamond D and then tell me he sounds like Tupac.
Does Big L sound ANYTHING like Del the funky homosapien? Hell no.
Cali Agents are the shit.

Go do some research.

i love rap, i love lil jon...hes the fucking man..

but i dont understand how you cant like biggie.. even if you dont like rap, you have to at least have some respect for it

you are being quite ignorant, there are more rappers out there in the underground and such than you can even imagine, and if you don't think they have talent freestyling and such then you my friend are a fool

give credit where credit is due.. maybe all the top rappers today dont deserve the money they have but you shouldn't take rap and stereotype it just based on the people you see on mtv.. rap is a bigger genre than you think so next time you make a generalization, think about the whole picture not just the hotshots in it.

btw sorry for the triple post

So the verdict is in.
All rap is ghey.

Maybe I should have started off by saying all gangster rap is shitty.
which is like 90% of it.

Coming from the most closed minded person when it comes to music, yet sings "every day I'm hustlin" at random intervals during the day. Stop the facade Sean.

I said I liked some rap. And the word IS some.

I am not avoiding generalizing, I AM generalizing. There are certain facts that I cannot go on without ignoring. I just, personally, dont find most rappers talented.

Most of my friends are wiggers and they seem to know which CDs to buy before the " artists' " songs become popular. Yeah, Id have to say Ive been shown the "good shit."

Some of it is good, quite good, even the copies. However, regardless of if it works, its just not creative. Thus, doesnt deserve the allegid credit thats due. The reason I pick on rap for copying other peoples' music rather than other genres, is because Ive never heard it so constant with any other genre.

I am well aware of other genres copying... E.g. Aaron Lewis singing one of Pearl Jam's songs, Alanis Morresette singing one of Seal's, etc. But I dont listen to rap as constantly as I do alternative, so it would be safe to assume that I would hear more 'repeated remixes' in alternative than with rap, since I spend more time listening to it.

But I dont. Ugh, just make one of them play a fucking instrument and then Ill say they got skillz. Here, use my flesh flute. Have at it, Hoss.

RZA of the Wutang comes up with alot of original beats.
The Roots play real instruments.
LL Cool J did an Unplugged set for MTV.

You gotta think about where the art of rhyme came from, places where all you had was if lucky a radio, maybe a tape deck and maybe a record player to scratch on, instruments aren't common in an area like that cause well they wouldn't last they'd get snatched from your hands and pawned quickly. If all you have is your mouth for music then you get a beat boxer and a rhymer and you have a street corner concert, cause not everyone can be a gospel singer, but you still wanna express yourself. Someone banging out a little beat on a trashcan, another guy tapping a bottle against a wall for a melody.

Jedi Mind Tricks is the sickest rap crew period. Especially with Army Of the Pharoahs. Check out Jedi Mind Tricks - Presents_Army_Of_The_Pharaohs-The_Torture_Papers-2006

To say rap is not creative is just ignorant.

Wiggers are fucking idiots... That's your source?

Turntables are an instrument. I'd like to see you try to scratch something that sounds halfway decent.

btw, to say that you only like the rap songs with "catchy beats" is pretty weak. you obviously aren't intelligent enough to comprehend good lyrics, because if you were, you would realize there are just as many good lyricists in rap as there are in your beloved alternative rock.

True Story, I write sick lyrics all the time, lawl

This picture has a long boring inside joke behind it, just understand that this picture was drawn in the last month of my Algebra 2 class, and actually sat in its own seat for a week.

Damn, a lot of shit-talking going on here with regard to rap. That's unfortunate. There is a lot of great rap out there with positive messages spoken through thoughtful metaphor and simile. I don't like rap where the focus is talking about how rich they are and how flagrantly they spend their money, but when it's about growing up and trying to make it in a fucked up world, about achieving something, about love, or any other topic such as these, I'm all for it. Sometimes they come up with simply amazing rhymes and their vocals are turned into another instrument so to speak.

Groups/artists I like include Jurassic 5, Del the Funk Homosapien, Gangstarr, Jedi Mind Tricks, etc.

Well said by one of the only reasonable people thats has responded to this thread.

I used to want to reply to all those who would simply say "rap sucks" and make generalizations, but I won't waste my time anymore. Those close minded people who attack and over generalize about something they don't know much about are worse than rappers with no talent who rap about their money. Their ignorance is right along side it.

But looking at your list CP, I agree. Gangstarr is probably one of my all-time favorite groups. I may be biased because Guru is from MA, but he's got the sickets flow with one of the best mono-tone voices. And I don't even have to say anything about Premier. Everyone who knows hip hop knows just how talented he is.

As for Jedi Mind. Violent by Design was one of my favorites when I was in high school because they had that nice underground sound that flourished among the commercial shit that lacked. But the more and more I listen to them, I become less and less attracted because they go over the top with their vivdly violent, Islamic natured lyrics that don't do too much for me.

For all those looking for some names to escape the commerical artists ruling the radio these days and probably days to come, try these out:

KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, Ras Kass, Killah Priest, Inspectah Deck, Cormega (highly recommended), Pete Rock, Afu Ra, Pharoah Monch, Ghostface, A Tribe Called Quest, Scarface, Spice 1, the Roots, Nas, JR Writer, Tragedy Khadafi, Nature, Lake, CNN, AZ, Common, Akrobatik, Krumbsnatcha, Kweli, Common, Executioners, Alchemist, Killarmy, Kool G rap, Dan the Automator......I could go on for days.

I'm listening to General Patton and the X-ecutioners right now, I can tell they had a blast making that album.

I listen to The Marshall Mather's LP while I'm working out, makes me 20% stronger, it's a fact. :thumb:

90% of all rap music sucks

I do not even consider it music...

It is only comprised of:
an empty drum track,
a series of beeps, noises, and key tones,
some talking,
and maybe some grunts and groans for emphasis

:barf:

And dont even get me started on the content -

Don't take it too hard. There are plenty of people out there that detest country music too. I'm one of them. :)

As for Gangstarr, what kind of rap are they?

How can you detest country? Who are you DOMs? I just don't know now.

The only country song that I like is You Ain't Much Fun Since I Quit Drinking.

Who am I? What exactly are you looking for with this question?

Now only 10% racist.

This is the man I grew to admire! Gah, I just didn't see that coming.

None I guess. Just caught me off guard. I just figured you'd like country. Guess you can't judge a book by it's cover.
