are there any exercises i can do that will help prevent injuries like tearing an ACL and other serious knee injuries?

Split squats. start out slowly

Your best bet is doing many of your usual exercises in a proprioceptively enriched environment; single leg, bosu ball, physio ball, dyna disc, airex, half foam roll, etc...

dont do leg extentions... thats what an ortho told me...

Do single leg squats. start on the smith machine til you get comfortable with them. Also bulgarian split squats with dumbells at side.

Heard the same about leg extensions. Don't do them

My knees are pretty banged up. Had three surgeries and have some arthritis. My knees feel best when doing squats and running. I do the former about every 4-5 days and run 2-3 times a week. Leg ext and curls every 4-5 days on opposite days than squats.

2 knee questions:

1. Is it bad to have a clicky knee?

2. is it bad for me to crack my knees by squatting all the way down?

An ortho that works out at our gym explained to me that leg extensions, especially heavy ones, actually act as a shearing motion on the ligaments and where they attach.

Slow and controlled and feel the weight. They have you doing these on rehab so they can't be as bad as he thinks. Strong hams and calves really support the knees as well. I still think running is the best thing for legs overall and knees. Running on grass probably the best. Nice natural surface. Great cardio fitness. good to maintain form and function.
