Leucine and Muscle Growth

This is another good article by Mike Arnold.

However, there appears to be an underlying factor in how well Leucine elicits the mTOR "Growth Factor Effect."

How to Harness the Anabolic Power of Cell Volume
Bill Willis

...it takes more than just leucine to activate mTOR ? glutamine is also required

Glutamine was necessary for leucine uptake and cell volumization, both of which are needed to turn on protein synthesis. ...cellular glutamine depletion not only results in a reduction of cell volume, but also reduces the ability of leucine to activate protein synthesis.

glutamine is necessary for the activation of protein synthesis by leucine.

Takeaways from this study:

?Glutamine is needed for leucine to gain access into the cell to turn on protein synthesis.

?Glutamine induced cell volumization is necessary to turn on mTOR and protein synthesis

glutamine export is coupled to leucine import and mTOR activation.

To get leucine into the cell, there's an initial period of "glutamine loading."

Takeaways from this study:

?Glutamine is rate limiting for leucine activation of protein synthesis.

?A cell must be "glutamine pre-loaded" to import leucine.

Personal Observation

In spiking my whey protein beverage with Leucine, I didn't see much difference.

I suspect (I am guessing) that I was already consuming enough Leucine.

Thus, adding more didn't do anything for me.

Eventually a blind pick will run into an apple.

Inadvertently, I decided add Glutamine to my mix for a different reason.

In doing so, I obtain a much better training effect...my training sessions improved.

I suspect (guessing again) that I was deficient in Glutamine.

Thus, adding Glutamine to the mix provided a...

Synergistic Effect

Synergistic amounts to 2 + 2 = 5...the sum being greater than it's individual parts.

Bottom Line

Based on the research, it appears that Leucine's effect is enhanced with Glutamine.

Kenny thanks for chewing it up and feeding it to us. I've always enjoyed thee benefits if adding 5 grams of glutamine to my PWO shake. Maybe placebo but it works for me.
