I know the pros and cons and that it's a fairly old debate, but I think I have a new angle.

I don't want to cheat my forearms, but I also like to use the much heavier weights that straps allow.

When I first started working out, I used straps for all pulling excercises. Now that I've learned a bit more, I only use them for one arm dumbell rows and shrugs.

Even on those two I go as long as possible without, then use them when my grip fails. This way I figure that I'm still working my forearms because I go to failure, but also still am able to work my back with heavy weights on the last set or two.

Does that sound like someone rationalizing the use of straps, or a good way to get the best of both worlds?

well, I just saw another thread saying the same thing so I guess it's not a new angle and I got my question answered.

move along, nothing to see here

I usually use straps just like that, lift without them until I can't keep my grip and then use them, I don't want to cheat my forearms at the same time I would not like to cheat much larger muscles. So when needed I use them. I also do forearm curls and extensions on arm days, it actually seems to provide much more growth and strength for me than just relying on gripping pull movements for my forearms.

Basically, I agree with you, I think it is stupid to shortchange other muscles in lieu of forearm growth, much rather be deadlifting what I do rather than 20 pounds less.
