My doctor told me I was bordering on Diabetes II and I need to cut way back on the carbs. Anyone have good ideas for replacements for pasta rice and potates?

Here's some info you may want to read: Insulin You should also try to poke around the site, there's a lot fo good information there that would be helpful to you.

I no longer eat rice, potatoes, bread or pasta.

I eat eggs, meat (chicken, fish, steak), vegetables, fruit, beans, nuts, protein drinks and bars.

Prince, where do you get your fiber from? Do you eat any whole grain products like whole wheat bread, or shredded wheat cereal? I know that some nuts, and fruits and veggies have fiber, but not in very high amounts.

My GI has told me to eat lots of fiber, so I have been eating whole wheat bread, dry cereal (shredded wheatnbran or Kashi Good Friends)...also almonds. I do eat fruits and vegetables as well but these other foods seem to be more 'fiber-dense'.

Any suggestions on how to keep my fiber intake very high, but keep my 'bad carb' intake very low? Is it possible?

of course!

Broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, mushrooms...shit, i had a comprehensive list on my other computer. Dammit. There's moer than that but that's all ic an think of. Eat them in abundance. You need to eat a shit load before you get even 5-10g active carbs.

T_C_D, I understand that veggies have fiber. But I do not believe that they are as 'fiber rich' as some other food. Here's a list I found of the top twenty fiber foods:

1. Dried beans, peas, and other legumes
This includes baked beans, kidney beans, split peas, dried limas, garbanzos, pinto beans and black beans.
2. Bran cereals
Topping this list are Bran Buds and All-Bran, but 100% Bran, Raisin Bran, Most and Cracklin' Bran are also excellent sources.
3. Fresh or frozen lima beans, both Fordhook and baby limas
4. Fresh or frozen green peas
5. Dried fruit, topped by figs, apricots and dates
6. Raspberries, blackberries and strawberries
7. Sweet corn, whether on the cob or cut off in kernels
8. Whole-wheat and other whole-grain cereal products.
Rye, oats, buckwheat and stone-ground cornmeal are all high in fiber. Bread, pastas, pizzas, pancakes and muffins made with whole-grain flours.
9. Broccoli-very high in fiber!
10. Baked potato with the skin
(The skin when crisp is the best part for fiber.) Mashed and boiled potatoes are good, too-but not french fries, which contain a high percentage of fat.
11. Green snap beans, pole beans, and broad beans
(These are packaged frozen as Italian beans, in Europe they are known as haricot or french beans.)
12. Plums, pears, and apples
The skin is edible, and are all high in pectin.
13. Raisins and prunes
Not as high on the list as other dried fruits (see #5) but very valuable.
14. Greens
Including spinach, beet greens, kale, collards, swiss chard and turnip greens.
15. Nuts
Especially almonds, Brazil nuts, peanuts, and walnuts (Consume these sparingly, because of their high fat content.).
16. Cherries
17. Bananas
18. Carrots
19. Coconut
(dried or fresh-but both are high in fat content).
20. Brussels sprouts

I'm also interested to see your list. :)

Ah yes, spinach was in my list too. I really can't remember others.

firstly, i should have asked you this earlier; what do you mean by "bad carbs"?

Secondly, what is a GI?

Well, earlier in this thread when Prince said he does not eat rice, bread, potatoes, or pasta...there are many people on this board that see food like that as bad.

A GI is a gastroenterologist. I have Chrone's Disease, so I have to be somewhat more careful with what I eat. Most people would probably not have to be so careful with making sure they get enough fiber, but I am so lucky...I have to make sure I get lots and lots!

I know of Chrone's disease. Pop singer Anastacia has it. She looks great too.

If you want lots of fibre without the active carbs (or with minimal active carbs) then green veg is ideal.

Oh yeah! I actually knew about Anastacia, she's not as popular here as she is in Europe. My sister (who lives in Israel) was so excited to tell me that Anastacia had Chrone's. Too funny!

So, when you were saying that she looks great, too...did you meant that she looks great, in addition to me looking great. Or did you mean she looks great...and she has Chrone's?? :):)

But seriosuly, I think I would have to eat way too much broccoli to get the same amount of fiber I would get with a bowl of shredded wheat!

You don;t need to eat broccoli exclusively. I do have a bigger list somewhere. Just mix and match.

I remeber reading an interview with her and she said that the disease means she can;t drink, or do drugs or eat the "average" sloppy-joe's diet. She's thankful cause she looks fit. (fit is a brit term to mean good looking, sexy, etc...)

I'm not exactly too sure what i meant by it. I think i was referring to having an gastrointestinal disorder and still being able to look great. The only pic i've seen of you is in your avatar and from what i see you do indeed look fit :)

Is Brown rice and Oats good or bad carbs? The only other real source of carbs that I have is my sweet potato.. (and Whole grain bread..but I know thats bad, high in sugars)

Well, i have no hard evidence to back this up, but i personally don;t eat any "man made" carbs (except spagettii cause i'm kinda hooked on it right now haha) by this i mean i don;t eat bread, pasta (except spagettii), dough or anything like that (unless it's a cheat day). I'll only eat "natural" carbs like rice, oats, sweet potatoes, fruit, veg etc...

T_C_D, there are other pics in my journal. And unfortunately, having Chrone's is not another way to be fit. Not saying she does that, I'm just saying that it's not like every person with Chrone's is fit. Except when you have a 'flare'...then you get real sick and lose lots of weight...but that's another story. Post your other list if you can find it.

epimetheus, in my honest opinion brown rice is okay if you keep the serving size reasonable. All natural oatmeal is good, too. Sweet potato are okay. Whole wheat bread is okay. I'm not a believer in cutting anything out of your diet completely, especially if it's good for you. But there are people out there who have a different view? Where are you people??

Hmmm...i worded that wrong, sorry.

She's thankful because otherwise she might be eating a shitty diet, drinking alcolhol too much, not exercising, possibly even using drugs etc... It's hard to explain this over the net.

No...I get it. Maybe I worded my last response incorrectly. It's all good! :)

one idea - eat lots of veggies and take a fiber supplement?

(but maybe that would be too harsh for you b/c of the Chrones - i'm not sure, just guesssing as you can probably tell)

Thanks nikegurl, for trying to help! I really can't eat a lot of veggies all day long...especially not raw!

I really don't have a problem with eating my shredded wheat, whole wheat bread, beans, and almonds. They have made my large intestine very happy! :) Unfortunately, I probably will never get 'ripped' eating all these things. :(

I think you look wonderful and it's definitely better for your large intestines to be happy. (seriously)

From what I've seen in your journal you're definitely making progress doing what you're doing so don't mess with it. We all want you feeling good. And it just so happens that you're looking good too!

nikegurl, that was very sweet...thanks! :)

I think I will just stay where I'm at the way I am currently eating. And I'm okay with that...it's just as women we are so programmed to never be happy with what we have. But I am much happier (digestively speaking) now and that's not worth losing any wieght, you know? :)
