For lunges,do you use dumbells, barbells or both for added weight?
I usually use dumbells but when I go heavy I get my traps involved so I thought about using a barbell instead.

Yeah, lunges always tire the crap out of me & it might be dangerous to do them with a barball in case I suddenly have to drop the weight.

I ALWAYS you a barbell behiond my neck...not only does it alow me to maintain an upright posture but it also allows me to use more weight, use more stabilizers for balance, and eliminate the arms, shoulders, and traps from the exercise.

In terms of the kunges specifically, I do forward, backward, and horizontal lunges, as well as plyometric lunges....they're tiring but WORK!

Welcome back :) Thanks for the info you think I should do the smith machine first to help get the feel of it?

I only do them occasionally, and when I do it's with dumbbells. Also, I do them last, after squats or leg press, so it's hard to go heavy, hence the use of dumbbells.

I don't do them a lot either but I get tired of the same heavy routine(squats) I mean I know how good squats are for ya(that's why I do them so much) but lunges seem to hit my hams and glutes better

Yeah I hear that I would start off light to get the balance
