NEW YORK (CNN) -- Legendary football coach and broadcaster John Madden is retiring, he announced Thursday.

"It's been such a great ride ... the NFL has been my life for more than 40 years, it has been my passion -- it still is," he said in a statement released by NBC Sports.

Madden, 73, was a Hall of Fame coach for the Oakland Raiders, but is best known to millions as an ebullient football commentator.

He won 16 Emmy awards for outstanding sports analyst/personality, NBC said.

Thank god! I had to turn the volume off when watching his games.

He had to Retire.....Brett Favre isn't around anymore.

i really didn't think he was that good. oh well

He was the most annoying SOB I ever heard.

It was like watching the old Batman TV series.

Fuck I disliked him so much.

I hope they keep Al Michaels though.

The most annoying broadcaster ever is Tim McCarver and it's not even close.

I thought he brought a lot of knowledge to the booth, and he was quite a character.:(

He's was getting tougher to listen to in his older years. LOL @ the Favre reason

You kids can knock him all you want, but there was no one better than Madden and Summerall in their heyday. They were the best.
