most heavy users not in IT don't keep their PC properly maintained, which is obviously to be expected....since 1994 I have had to re-install Windows maybe 5-8x and have never paid for anti-virus software, I refuse to....the malicious software that is written today is totally different then it was back in the day when geeks used to write boot sector viruses or wipe out the FAT, etc. there is more out there today but it is far less destructive than it used to be.

Now you are just a carrier and a dirty e-skank. Your Mac can still be infected even if it usually isn't affected. When Mac users don't run AV they are giving their contacts the cooties. I still run AV even on my Linux computers to protect the people I know.

Macs can get windows based viruses. However, and don't quote me, they cannot actively infect the computer. You can still give them to people who use windows based platforms via email and file sharing.

Avast and ClamXV are two products that people should consider having on their macs. Another thing is to NEVER type in your password, for an unknown program, that is asking for access to your HD. That is the main portal for possible infection via virus/malware.

Probably not, but it is possible. I am a computer technician and I have a friend that is a computer security specialist that has specifically warned me about this so that I would not inadvertently infect my customer's computers if I attached them to one of my systems for scanning or data recovery. Macs (and Linux) aren't immune to viruses and malware, they just aren't targeted as much because there are less Macs than PCs so people don't bother to produce as much malicious software to target them. Not as likely that I would get infected just from you sending me an email but if you had an infected file and then gave me a copy of the file it could infect a Windows computer easily. It would definitely still be my fault for not protecting my own computer... I was just looking for the opportunity to call someone an e-skank.

This kind of shit happens everyday. Surprised to hear something like this on the news. There are plenty of botnets, malware, viruses etc, that are all accumulating before the hacker decides to actually take action with said victims.

People create botnets for years and accumulate thousands and thousands of victims, and years later execute whatever they please with there zombies. Often DDOS attacks, or stolen identities/cards, but occasionally people become more creative, and use them to get clicks, software purchases, advertisement etc. A lot of money can be made.

I remember a botnet a few years ago that was created a year before hand and when executed, 30 million people were infected.

Just make sure you got your AV up and running. If you don't have one, get the free version of Avast.

Used to post entire articles, but all that text apparently did not get any hits. Then I bumped into the Associated Press YouTube channel -- short text plus video! Lots more comments or participation than the old full text attempt.

I'm pretty ignorant of world and local events, so the AP keeps me feeling in touch a bit more.

How exactly would you attempt to stop the government from taking action?

The average joe doesn't have the ability to set up protection to prevent their neighbor from stealing their cable -- how would they stop the government from scanning their pc's? If Big Brother is peeking over my shoulder then I'm certainly oblivious to the activity.
