I am a person who needs a goal to achieve best results. Going for a 300 bench, for example, kept me focused and disciplined in working out. But now that is done, and I feel aimless in the gym. I am also very competitive in nature.

I missed a Marine Corps bench press competition back at Camp Pendleton as I already worked out and was exhausted before I realized it was on, and I could have won my age class (well, I was the only over 50 there) and could have placed second in the open category.

So my question is about masters competitions. Are they common, what are the age qualifications, and do they do simple lifts like bench presses? I am 53, in good shape but rather beat up after years in the infantry (with a war injury) and playing rugby. So I am limited to things like squats and bench presses with simple, isolated ranges of motions.

I work in Thailand now, but I would be willing to fly back to the US for a good competition.
