Ok here's the deal!!I went to regular DR. on Mon. who took xray's of my back and on the xray it looked like I had A slight curviture in my lower spine and recomended that I go see a Chiro,so today I went and after doing some tests and cracking my neck and back so loud ,I think they heard it in the waiting room(it felt awesome though) said it looks like a mild form of scoliosis but he's not sure untill more test's, and I get an ultra sound on Fri.and after I asked about lifting he said to lay off squats and deads, because later on in life it could really affect me.Anyone have expierences with this?or have simillar prob.s

I have scoliosis which isn't so mild, mine is quite visible without x-rays and testing, I see a chiro every 3 weeks now and I have no restrictions to my training.

I do relatively heavy straight legged deads with no probs at all, I had to give up squatting recently because I'm a gimp but not because of the scoliosis. ;)

Another question I have to britchick is what kind of exercices are you doing to help with strengthing?he told me to really build up my ab's and also back ext's

I haven't been given any specific exercises to do, my scoliosis starts higher up my spine than yours, I don't know if that makes much of a difference.
Mine mainly effects my neck and shoulders, I used to get severe neck and headaches, I am virtually pain free these days.
He did give me specific neck, shoulder and upper back stretches.
The only other thing I am not allowed to do is carry my purse on my left shoulder any more, that won't be a prob for you. :p
With my training I am just now focusing on my form when I lift, making sure it's symmetrical etc., my shoulders were out height wise from left to right side by nearly 2".

That's intresting because one of the first things he did was check if my shoulders were even and that my leggs were the same length,he said both looked fine, just out of curiosity did scoliosis run in your family?my dad and my brother both have the same prob.

Well I am thinking it did.
I only recently discovered that I had this, I've had the neck and headaches for years since I was a teen but no doc ever figured out the problem.
I compete and I started to notice how asymmetrical I looked in pics, not a good thing for the sport so I only went to see a chiro to see if he could straighten me out, he has somewhat, I am only screwed from the mid back up.
On hindsight I am almost positive that my mum suffered from the same thing, she was very lopsided, same side as me but she always thought it was from having a masectomy on one side, okay that kinda sounds funny now... but anyhow it was the same side as me and about as pronounced.

Well BT it look's like you got it beat pretty good, the fact your not letting somthing like this bring ya down takes away the worry from me,hear im already being all negative about it and not even positive that I have it,and here you are knowing you have it and still kicking ass:rocker: :thumb:

I know think there are a few others around here with it so you will probably getting plenty more feedback too. Good luck with it. :thumb:

Tommy--hey, sounds like you got worked over pretty good...ain't it great! How does your back feel? You're having an ultrasound (visualizing) for your scoliosis? or he's doing ultrasound (treatment) on your back?

I had some kinda test a few years back that took a scan which basically takes a picture or scan of your whole body. it tells you how much muscle, fat and bone you have in each bp. anyways, the guy said my back was starting to curve, although i don't know how serious to take it cuz a) he wasn't a dr., merely a grad student, and b) i don't know if there's any health risks even if it is curving.

i'm thinkin' its from doing deads/squats, cuz i notice when i squat my ass tends to go a little to the right.

anyways, is this bad?

Flex--biomechanical disadvantage. Our spines are really absolutely brilliant in their construction from a structural, functional, mechanical point of view... if your spine is abnormally curved it can predispose you to injury and/or back problems. That being said, go see a chiropractor. S/He may take x-rays and do some tests to determine if you really do have a curve/scoliosis and be able to advise you accordingly. If your ass really is shifting to one side during squats (funny image in my head, thank you) it would, IMHO, indicate a muscle imbalance that your body is compensating for or that you really do have something structurally "wrong" in your spine/pelvis. If you can squat "straight" at a low/no weight, its most likely muscular.

:wave2: Hi Kimber!!Oooo yea! I felt like a human pretzel with some of the thing's he was doing, but it felt awesome.Im not sure on witch kind of ultrasound:hmmm: but he told me he wanted to see how my back moves so I guess he's going to give me some test's, so i'll find out on Fri.What is ultrasound treatment? maybe that's what he ment.

Flex!! man if you can swing it go see a chiro I felt like a new man walking out of there.

Hi Tommy--I'm a "crack" addict, so great! :D The ultrasound to see how you move would be like the thing they use on a pregnant woman's belly to see the baby...can't say I know any chiro's who do that,:hmmm: but not to say it isn't done. The ultrasound treatment is a deep heat method which a lot of chiro's use. Interesting...you'll have to let me know what happens there.

I just started going to a chiro about 4 weeks ago, he said that my spine was twisted, upper part to the left and lower to the right, like ringing a towel. I also have a nice size bend in my middle back. The doc asked me what I do for workouts, oh and a sub doc did also, I do heavy Deads and Squats, they did not have any problems with it, actually one told me to try kettel bells. :)

 Ha! crack addict!!I could see an addiction prob.down the line for me to.For the ultras. therapy he used a gel that penitrates deep into the muscle's around the affected area so it relaxes them,it's actually hot when he puts in on then turns cold and he rub's it in for about 10 min.he also adjusted my back and neck again, and I have to say that im sitting here typing this virtually pain free cause before I couldn't sit in a chair without pain,he seemed pretty happy with the pain gone and the inflamation was gone to.He also told me to ice it for 15 mins. and the use heat for 30 mins.

Tommy--that's so great, I'm glad you're doing better! Any restrictions on your training?

He pretty much said that it's up to me with a warning that I could have some problems when im older, but if you look at some other people who resonded to this thread Brit chick and Twigs they both have it worse than me,so I think im just going build up those ab's and lower back and just use strict form on squats and deadlift's,it's hard to not do these them being the best overall mass builders

We're all gonna have problems when we get older from one thing or another...might as well be something you enjoy! Get adjusted regularly, too, IMO it helps a lot!
