Asking IM members to be informed on the topic before they vote is kind of counter-productive to a solid discussion considering the class of individuals we have here at IM dont you think?

I try not to.

I think you guys are missing the big picture.

We need another bill like this aimed at people who abuse the welfare system and those cocksucking "big Business" assholes who use "Immanent domain" as a tool to take away people's private property for commercial gain.

To tell you the truth this may have been a very large component in the trials on Sadam Heussein considering he would be the first and most identifiable "alien" unlawful enemy combatant.

he got enough of a royal beat down. i talked to the photographer who took the picture of sadam in his hole. he told me sadam spit at the guy who found him and then took a rifle butt to the mouth.

You think a bunch of posters on the Internet who regularly regurgitate such gems as "True story," "ghey," and "#9" have the attention span to finish a 38 page long legal document? Right... I know I don't.

Pathetic

I wrote about this Act before when it was proposed some time back. It's a fucking abomination. I hate to get highbrow this early in the morning, but I have the flu and I'm going home.

The Act strips the right to habeus corpus from only alien suspects. HC is the cornerstone of any civil, sophisticated legal system. It refers to the right have a court determine whether you are imprisoned lawfully. To deny it to anyone is to go "lynch mob" on the accused. That's unacceptable. That's lawless.

The Act also gives the president tremendous latitude in determining who is an "enemy combatant" subject to legalized torture. An EC is anyone (not just aliens) that materially or purposefully support hostilities against the US...even if that person did not participate in the hostilities. "What hostilities?" one might ask. That's open to debate (these protesters of the war have already been accused of lending support to the enemy), but the president is given dictatorial latitude.

In fact, that latitude could cause the Act to be unconstitutional. If a law is overbroad or vague, the supreme court will strike it down. That's assuming that the court honors the historical principles/precedents informing constitutional temperment and does not engage in 'on the fly' activism as was the case in Bush v. Gore.

I am further sickened by our supine republican led congress and the dictatorial enabling of an incompetent, anti-constitutional president.

Remember which congressman voted for this unconstitutional law:
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/vote.xpd?vote=h2006-491 (House)
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/vote.xpd?vote=s2006-259 (Senate)

Look at how Russ Feingold voted. Become familiar with this brilliant man. As far as I know, he's the only Statesman in politics today.

Good day.
