The Science and Practice of Strength Training by Vladimir Zatsiorsky

Overall, I felt that I learned a lot from this book, although it may not be the best read for a pure bodybuilder. It seems to center mostly on strength training and/or training for sports. I can only recall the occasional focus on inducing hypertrophy, and there is virtually nothing about diet mentioned anywhere in this book. This can be good or bad, depending on what kind of information you are looking for, but I think the book contains valuable information that anyone could use. The chapters on injury prevention and rehabilitation, most notably, come to mind.

Although the quality of the information seemed to be very high, I felt the book read a bit too much like a textbook. Nearly everything mentioned in the book was backed by a study, even though some of the studies used small sample sizes of the population. There is a lot of good information related to the transmutation of training effects, the inner working of the central nervous system, force related to joint angles, and many more topics that sometimes get very scientific in explanation.

I think this book is a must read if you train for strength or sport. If you are a bodybuilder, there are probably other books I would read before this. Although I would definitely tack this onto the list somewhere down the line.

Where have you been slacker? Did you get rid of the girl.. is that why your back? lol :D

I don't know that I'm back, but I think I'll try to post periodically again from now on. I just found myself spending far too much time on these forums instead of doing other things. Priorities my friend.

Also, to the next poster, don't neglect books. These forums are a great source of information, but I guarantee you will learn a lot from outside sources.

Books are usually someones opinion of what works for them or whoever they trained. It may not work for me.

Often this is true. However, this book contains a lot of scientific information. As well, there are a lot of studies backing what is claimed. In addition, what do you think the training routines people outline on these forums are? Their opinions on what works. The difference is that books are often written by more credible sources. In this case a premier strength training coach with a PhD.

absolutely agree, this book is juits a great read. very technical and scientific, alot to diges, but a great read indeed. Zatiorsky is not just spouting out opinions in here btw, he is extremely well credentialed and it reads like a physics book. good lookin cowpimp

he is one smart guy!

Dr. Zatsiorsky has influenced enough high level people that he is probably pretty spot-on as far as things working or not. At least in the benching world though, not everyone does speed training, so there are other ways to skin a cat.
