MMA News and Notes

Yeah, doesn't quite make sense competitively. The only season I see giving it to Mir is because he was the former champ. The HW division is so iffy, though.

Report: UFC's Rachelle Leah posing nude for Playboy

by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Aug 15, 2008 at 5:15 pm ET

Former UFC ring girl and current "UFC All Access" host Rachelle Leah will pose nude for an upcoming issue of Playboy.

The news comes from our friends at MMARated.com.

Leah appeared in a previous edition of Playboy when she was featured as the "Babe of the Month" in the October 2006 edition of the magazine, though she was clothed for the one-page feature.

However, Leah will reportedly bare all for her latest appearance in the magazine, which is expected to come out in three months.

Leah, 23, is a model and former paramedic student who was once the UFC's most recognizable ring girl. However, she turned in her booty shorts and began hosting episodes of "UFC All Access," the UFC's official event preview show, in early 2006. She was recently ranked 76th in FHM's "100 Sexiest Women in the World 2008" feature.

Despite a less-visible role with the UFC, Leah remains one of the most-searched UFC personalities on MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com) and throughout the Web.

Playboy launched in December 1953 with pop-culture icon Marilyn Monroe as the centerfold. Since then, the magazine has grown into a multi-media company and arguably the most popular "men's magazine" in U.S. history. Numerous celebrities -- including actresses, athletes and musicians -- have posed for the publication.

Playboy has a circulation of approximately three million readers in the U.S. and seven million worldwide.
Fuck yeah!

Okay so I just watched the GSP Hughes fight. We all knew it would not go well for Matt, so I doubt anyone was surprised at the fast ending. The way GSP took of the interim belt and refused it 'til he wins the real belt was all class.

Chuck Liddell vs. Anderson Silva, Forrest Griffin vs. Wanderlei Silva Possible In December

  • By: Kris Karkoski | Aug 18, 2008
The UFCâ??????s year-end event is typically the promotionâ??????s most-stacked card of the year and this year should be no exception.

In the headline bout of the December 27th event, UFC 92, â?????The Ultimate Fighter 8â???³ coaches, interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and former heavyweight champion Frank Mir, are set to square off for the UFCâ??????s heavyweight title and joining them with co-main event status could be one of three top matchups.

According to NBCSports.com the UFC is likely to sweeten the pot for UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre in an attempt to convince him take on UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn at the December event (as opposed to early-2009). However, if that bout fails to materialize UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva could return to the 205-pound light heavyweight division to take on former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell or newly-crowned light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin could put his title on the line against former PRIDE champion Wanderlei Silva.

â?????[Anderson Silva vs. Chuck Liddell] has a few obstacles in its path,â??? said the NBCSports.com report. â?????Liddell is fighting in September, so assuming he wins, heâ??????d have enough time to recover. But Silva is competing on Oct. 25 against Patrick Cote. Heâ??????d have to come out of that match unscathed and take a fight with only two months to prepare against Liddell.â???

â?????Some have suggested Forrest Griffinâ??????s first title defense as a possibility, and the only contender that will be ready by Dec. 27 is Wanderlei Silva, so if Griffin were to defend the belt on that night, it would likely be against the â?????Axe Murdererâ???,â??? the report continued. â?????Silva, however, seems to be expecting to fight [Quinton] Rampage Jackson.â???

I'd pretty much shit my pants if this happens.

Fore! Golf club breaks Nate Quarryâ??????s eye socket

By: MMAmania
natequarry.jpg

Middleweight Nate Quarry has once again found himself on the sidelines, recovering from a facial injury sustained at party in Albany, Ore., more than one month ago.
The â?????Rockâ??? broke his orbital floor -â?????? a bone that keeps an eye in place -â?????? when he was on the wrong end of a golferâ??????s back swing, according to FCFighter.com. It certainly sounds painful, but fortunately for him, it is nowhere near as serious as the severe back injury that nearly cost him his fighting career.

Hereâ??????s a snip from Nate:
â?????Iâ??????m just glad it was me and not some kid or other woman. We had grown men swinging these clubs. If it would have hit a kid or a woman, it would have smashed their face.â???
Quarry is on a two-fight win streak since his return to the Octagon almost one year ago. The former 185-pound title challenger knocked the rust off after almost two years of inactivity by knocking out Pete Sell at UFC Fight Night 11 in September 2007.

He then followed up that performance with a unanimous decision win over an extremely elusive Kalib Starnes at UFC 83: â?????Serra vs St. Pierre 2â??? in April of this year.
Quarry indicates that he will be ready for action in November or December. There is a pay-per-view (PPV) event rumored for November 15 in Portland, Ore., which would essentially be a fight in his hometown.

I've been wondering where he's been. Can't say that I'm a fan, but his stand-up seems to have improved immensely since his back surgery.

Depending on the rest off the card I'd even be tempted to actually pay for that one vs downloading it and watching the next morning.

From what it's looking like now, they're shooting for the greatest MMA card ever.

Owwwwww .... that's a hard thing to do.

Some of the old Pride cards were insane, as were some of the old UFC cards.

Yeah there are some great cards, but to have 3 of the 4 top pound for pound fighters on the same card? On a card where a BJ Penn/GSP title fight may happen, and it wouldn't even be the main event? Forrest vs. Wandy or even Wandy/Page 3? Good lord.

yeah I'm with ya ... it'll be a killer card. Especially if they pull out a even half way decent prefight lineup.

Yoshida vs. Kikuchi - Cageforce 4

Yoshida is a UFC newcomer, winning his first fight by making quick work of TUF 6 vet "War Machine". He was the star of a Japanese cage based promotion that used the unified rules, so there shouldn't be much of a transition period. He's slated to fight Karo Parisyan @ UFC 88, and I see him winning and making a name for himself here in the states.

Jake Shields vs. Paul Daley title fight slated for Oct. 4 EliteXC-CBS

by Dann Stupp on Aug 21, 2008 at 1:02 pm ET
Newly crowned EliteXC welterweight champion Jake Shields (21-4-1) is expected to make his first title defense when he meets Paul Daley (18-6-2) at EliteXC's upcoming CBS event.

The show takes place Oct. 4 at the BankAtlantic Center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

When recently contacted by MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com), EliteXC Vice President Jared Shaw dispelled rumors of Shields fighting Matt Lindland at an Affliction event and instead said the welterweight would defend his EliteXC title against a "worthy, worthy challenger."

That challenger turns out to be Daley, a Cage Rage veteran who's won his past six fights -- five by knockout. Two of the wins came to UFC veterans Sammy Morgan and Duane "Bang" Ludwig while fighting under the EliteXC banner.

However, the 25-year-old Muay Thai specialist will have his hands full with the crafty Shields, whose current 10-fight win streak includes submission victories in four of his past five fights. The 29-year-old most recently defeated Nick Thompson, a fighter ranked just outside the welterweight division's world top 10, in just 63 seconds.

Earlier this month, after Vitor Belfort was forced off the card with a hand injury, Shields' name was mentioned as a possible "Affliction: Day of Reckoning" opponent for Lindland. However, Shaw said it was merely speculation.

"That fight hasn't even been brought to our attention from the Affliction camp or from the Shields camp," he said.

The Shields-Daley fight should be finalized in the coming days.

The Oct. 4 EliteXC event will also feature Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson, though his opponent has not been determined. Additionally, popular female fighter Gina Carano meets a tough and experienced Kelly Kobold-Gavin in a televised bout.

Finally a legit opponent for Jake. Daley was rumored to have signed with the UFC a while back but that obviously fell through.

Antonio â?????Bigfootâ?????? Silva tests positive for steroids after Elite XC title win

By: James Iannotti

Newly crowned Elite XC heavyweight champion, Antonio â?????Bigfootâ??? Silva, has tested positive for Boldenone after winning the first-ever vacant division crown over Justin Eilers at â?????Unfinished Businessâ??? last month, according to California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) Acting Assistant Executive Officer Bill Douglas.

â?????Bigfootâ??? has been suspended for 12 months and fined the standard $2,500.
Boldenone, which is apparently one of the hardest steroids to mask on a blood test, can show up on tests as much as a year and a half after use. It is often used by body builders because of itâ??????s ability to add strength and size.

Other mixed martial artists who have tested positive for the drug include Josh Barnett, Phil Baroni and Kit Cope.

Thereâ??????s no telling what prompted Silva to use the drug in his preparation for his title fight with Eilers, but we do know he was coming off a pretty serious knee injury.

Some athletes have been known to use the drug to heal injuries at a faster rate. Itâ??????s even possible â?????? since Boldenone stays in your system for so long â?????? that â?????Bigfootâ??? used the drug before his February fight against Ricco Rodriquez when his knee injury was still fresh.

That was a huge fight for him. And one that eventually led to the title fight with Eilers five months later. Perhaps Silva rolled the dice and took the steroid, hoping to not get tested, instead of facing a world class talent such as Ricco with a bum leg.

Itâ??????s hard to imagine Silva would be looking to gain an edge on Eilers. Looking at the two fighters side by side, one would think it would be Eilers trying to gain an advantage â?????? he was giving up almost 60 pounds and three inches to the gigantic Brazilian.

Either way, â?????Bigfootâ??? got popped, and Elite XC has another hurdle to jump. For a company already on the brink of possible collapse, this is devastating news.

There is no word yet on what Elite XC plans to do during the year-long suspension, but Elite XC canâ??????t afford to sit and wait on its champion to get reinstated. Itâ??????s certainly possible he may be stripped of his title.

SO much for EliteXC's hopes of having a legitimate heavyweight division. This is a big blow.

It said that Wandy is expected to fight Jackson, but....how is Jackson doing anyway?

Jackson is fine. He's back training already and is preparing to fight someone/anyone by the end of the year.

bahahaha

Come on guys, if you aren't going to try to hide the roids give it a break. Wtf are these guys thinking. I really think some fighters are just plain stupid.

KJ Noons' manager says Nick Diaz not top contender, scoffs at EliteXC deadline

by John Morgan on Aug 21, 2008 at 4:50 pm ET

With the clock ticking for 160-pound champion KJ Noons' EliteXC-issued 5 p.m. PT deadline to sign a bout agreement to face Nick Diaz on an Oct. 4 CBS broadcast, the situation appears at an impasse.

Noons' manager Mark Dion today told MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com) he is unconcerned with EliteXC Vice President Jared Shaw's demands.

"The update on [the deadline] is nothing is going to happen with it," Dion said. "That's what's going to happen with that. I don't care about how many threats [Shaw] wants to pull. We'll be doing a press conference if EliteXC doesn't see the light here pretty soon and if Shaw doesn't stop talking [expletive]."

While Shaw has claimed he's been unable to reach Noons or Dion -- while also hinting that Noons and Dion may have issues with his contract and pay -- Dion said the sticking point is the choice of opponent.

"As far as Nick Diaz, he's not the No. 1 contender out there," Dion said. "To [EliteXC] he is. He's the number one (for getting) eyeballs to (watch) them. They're pushing on eyeballs versus a career move for a champion like KJ. KJ is really not the one who gets anything out of the fight. Diaz does and so does ProElite."

Dion said if the situation between Noons and EliteXC does not improve, he will hold a press conference to bring the particulars of the debate to light.

"We'll do a press conference to discuss everything," Dion said. "But there's nothing in it for KJ unless [EliteXC] finally wakes up a little bit. That's why we'll have a press conference. I don't like to talk and beat a company that's already beat down. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully they'll see the light."

Dion insisted that in Noons' fight for widespread recognition, the champion only wants to fight the best EliteXC can possibly offer.

"I would think Eddie Alvarez is the No. 1 contender," Dion said. "He's definitely ranked higher than Nick Diaz. KJ already beat Nick Diaz."

While Alvarez is currently unavailable due to taking personal time off, Dion does not feel that is reason to arrange a rematch with Diaz.

"Eddie Alvarez is getting married, but that's not our problem," Dion said. "People get married in five or 10 minutes."

Detractors of Dion have pointed out that it was the City Boxing owner's negotiating tactics that kept former client Brandon Vera out of the UFC for nearly a year. Dion counters by explaining that situation resulted in a huge windfall for Vera.

"Look at Brandon Vera," Dion said. "He had a long layoff, but he's making more money than the No. 1 ranked [expletive] fighter in the world, Anderson Silva -- or the same amount.

"And now Anderson Silva is getting Bud Light sponsorships from (UFC President) Dana (White) handed down to him. He's getting to fight at 205 (pounds). He's kind of telling them what he wants to do. Why? Because you got people like Brandon Vera, who's on a losing streak and not performing, making more money than the most valuable guy.

"Who do you think negotiated that [expletive] contract a year and a half ago? And if you look at my Post-it, the one I negotiated was a $7 million deal for four years. It's nothing close to [$100,000] and [$100,000] (as a win bonus). As far as trying to bring in the Mark Dion negatives and stuff, good luck. Show me any negatives on it. And that's just a pitch [EliteXC] can use. But hey, I know my [expletive]. I've been around this sport a long, long time."

In the end, Dion insists it is important for observers to realize his role in the negotiation process.

"I don't bend over for nobody, and I don't let my fighters do it," Dion said. "I'm not a booking agent. I don't book my fighters and schmooze deals to work for the promoters. I work for my fighters."

And Dion has a message for anyone watching closely as Shaw's deadline nears.

"Forget 5 o'clock," Dion said. "I ain't waiting until 5 o'clock. If [EliteXC officials] are holding their breath, then someone's going to pass out."

.... I smell pussy.

Greased lightning: Kenny Florian â?????A little suspiciousâ?????? of Roger Huerta at UFC 87

By: Jesse Holland

To be honest he was really slippery and I donâ??????t mean that like technically-wise, he was really slippery. I donâ??????t know, I donâ??????t want to speculate and say that something was used or whatever but he was just hard to hang on to and that was from all the positions. Even when I had him in like a headlock or a guillotine everything was just really slippery. When I get the position, when I get mount, when I get back-mount, Iâ??????ve fought and Iâ??????ve wrestled some of the best guys on the ground from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission wrestling to MMA and when I get those positions youâ??????re not getting out and Roger was able to get out. It was pretty slippery so I was a little surprised. Just the first time I was mounted on him and he gave his back I was a little suspicious, I knew something was up. Who knows, all I know is Iâ??????m good at keeping those positions and I know the difference between sweat and something else and it felt like something else but who knows. (Jokingly) Maybe itâ??????s Albolene left over from the day before from the weight cut!
-UFC lightweight contender Kenny Florian tells The Fight Card radio show that something didnâ??????t feel quite right in his decision win over Roger Huerta at UFC 87: â?????Seek and Destroyâ??? on August 9.

Very interesting. Kenny doesn't strike me as the kind of guy that would just make something like this up. Not only that, but Melvin Guillard used a similar tactic in his fight against Huerta.
