MMA News and Notes

As long as Dana sends Roy some real competition right away and gets him pummeled, I have no problem with him for now. Dana might give him Ben Rothwell in the mean time. Or maybe Buentello. Jesus. I am NOT interested in seeing bowling balls fighting bowling pins.

Oh and to liven up the Kimbo fight...

As long as Dana feeds Roy harder competition for him to get his ass kicked, then I have no problem with him being in the UFC. Dana might feed him Rothwell or Buentello. Jesus. I am NOT interested in seeing bowling balls fighting bowling pins.

As far as the Kimbo fight:

Jon Jones romped Hamill, that was awesome. Sucks about the DQ, but Jones is turning into one of my favorite fighters. He's been training under Greg Jackson, too. IMO, he is currently the most exciting prospect in the UFC.

He was demolishing Hamil. I can't wait til he fights again, he is very exciting to watch. The DQ sucked, but I have no doubt a rematch would go similarly save for the ending.

The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale tops 5 million viewers; Scores 5.9 rating

The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale tops 5 million viewers; Scores 5.9*rating - MMA Mania

Kimbo did it again.

Ratings for the Spike TV broadcast of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 Finale peaked with 5.2 million viewers during the fight between Kimbo Slice and Houston Alexander last Saturday night, according to the cable network.

This latest milestone comes on the heels of the most successful season ever of the mixed martial arts reality series, which averaged 3.6 million viewers per episode.

Saturday???s event from "The Pearl" in Las Vegas, Nevada, not only featured the return of Slice to national television, but also the bout to decide this season???s "Ultimate Fighter" winner. Roy Nelson and Brendan Schaub squared off to determine the number one heavyweight from the show, and "Big Country" came through with a big knockout to gain the "six-figure" contract with the UFC.

Also, a light heavyweight bout between Jon "Bones" Jones and Matt Hamill left the officials in need of an instant replay, as Jones??? "12-6" elbows were enough to qualify for a disqualification.

However, while the card as a whole brought in a significant number of viewers, according to Spike, the Alexander-Slice 215-pound catchweight bout topped off the viewer rating with 5.9 rating in the highly regarded 18-34 year old male demographic.

Once again, the former bareknuckle Miami street brawler has proven his worth among a national demographic that has consistently shown interest in all facets of his fighting career. It seems only a matter of time before he is back on Spike TV, or the UFC decides to test his worth as a pay-per-view drawing power.

You buying what the promotion is selling?

I'm interested to see who they feed him now. I'm guessing it will be someone like Pat Barry or Antoni Hardonk.

Dana is a business man. He knows damn well Kimbo has no chance in the UFC...So he is going to feed him BS fights to make money off Kimbos name until people stop buying into it...then he will fight a real fighter and get slaughtered and that will end his UFC career. Dana walks away with fatter pockets, and hopefully Kimbo will feel like his UFC dreams have been satisfied.

Not much, just getting back into training after taking some time off. Been lurking for a past few days. What's new with you?

Got married, had a kid, got depressed. Getting back into training also.

The first kid is the toughest thing ever to adjust to.... no one will ever be able to explain how much stress it puts on you.

You got that right. I doubt we will be having another. He's 6 months now. I mean it is great but damn is it a lot of work.

UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez

Date: Dec 12, 2009

MAIN CARD
  • Champ B.J. Penn vs. Diego Sanchez (for lightweight title)
  • Cheick Kongo vs. Frank Mir
  • Jon Fitch vs. Mike Pierce
  • Kenny Florian vs. Clay Guida
  • Paul Buentello vs. Stefan Struve

PRELIMINARY CARD (un-aired)
  • Alan Belcher vs. Wilson Gouveia
  • Shane Nelson vs. Matt Wiman
  • Ricardo Funch vs. Johny Hendricks
  • Lucio Linhares vs. Rousimar Palhares
  • Edgar Garcia vs. DaMarques Johnson
  • Kevin Burns vs. T.J. Grant

I don't see how BJ loses this one to be honest and I like Diego.

I am actaully going with Diego just for the sake that I dont see BJ submitting him nor KOing him. Ill bet it comes to a decision, so I am hoping Diego truly never gasses with 2 extra rounds.

I was thinking Guida was a sure pick though.

So Chuck is coaching against Tito in the new season of TUF.

I struggle to find anything relevant or enticing about this fight. They are a couple of 1st generation MMA fighters that are going nowhere.

Chuck is 1-4 in his past 5. Tito is 0-3-1 in his past 4 and his two latest wins were over an aging has-been Ken Shamrock.

Chuck has KO-ed Tito twice. This fight is sad!

Dana will get his ratings, though.

Yeah I dont know what hes thinking. I know what I would be thinking..

Normally, I hate, hate, hate it when they use champs to coach. It ties up a weight division for far too long. However, I would like to see GSP coach. Why? He hasnt done it yet. Not completely.

If not the champs, why not get #1 contenders to coach for a title shot?

These 2 have already done the coaching AND the fighting. Though I think Tito is a good coach, I want to see him fighting someone ELSE.

Dana knows that which is why he made them the coaches of TUF. Both guys want to go out on top with their legacies in tact and Dana knows they can't compete anymore. Throw them on TUF where they'll be on the shelf for the next 6 months and let them compete against each other. I think it's more about protecting Chuck and appeasing Tito than anything.

Polish Strongman Mariusz Pudzianowski makes MMA debut on*Friday - MMA Mania

Mariusz Pudzianowski, the 32 year-old five-time World's Strongest Man winner from Poland, makes his MMA debut on Friday night at KSW 12 in Warsaw, Poland.

"Pudzian" will headline the fight card in a heavyweight bout against professional boxer, Marcin "El Testosteron" Najman.

While he has made his name in Strongman competitions, Pudzian is no novice to combat sports: He is a kyokushin karate practitioner who holds a fourth-kyu green belt in the discipline, and had trained in boxing for seven years before launching his Strongman career.

His opponent and fellow MMA newcomer, "El Testosteron" Najman, has compiled a 13-4 record in professional boxing.

Unfazed by Najman's fight game pedigree, Pudzian issued a foreboding warning to his opponent via Fight Magazine:
"If Najman wants to exchange punches with me I wish him luck. I won???t be as slow as an ox and I won???t let him beat me up. My mother didn???t raise me to be a bum. These hands can hurt; believe me."
star-divide.v5547.jpg

Aside from the Strongman fame, Pudzian sings in his eponymous musical group, Pudzian Band, that formed in 2005 and toured for the first time in 2006. He also starred in the 2008 Polish version of "Dancing with the Stars" and finished in the second place overall.

With his celebrity status, Mariusz Pudzianowski has the potential to succeed the former Olympic judo gold medalist and PRIDE veteran, Pawel Nastula, as Poland's MMA star.

He, along with Mamed Khalidov, the KSW middleweight champion who recently earned a high-profile upset victory over Jorge Santiago in Sengoku, may become the catalyst for Poland's burgeoning MMA scene.

Elsewhere on the fight card, TUF veteran, Dean "The Renegade" Amasinger (5-1) will face Polish national karate team member, Maciej "Highlander" Gorski (7-3) and UFC veteran and former Cage Rage Light Heavyweight champion, James Zikic will meet Daniel "Kociao" Dowda (5-2) in a middleweight contest. The event will also feature an eight-man heavyweight tournament.

Founded in 2004, Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki (KSW) or "Martial Arts Confrontation" in English, is Poland???s leading MMA organization. Modeled after Pride, KSW stages one-night four and eight-man tournaments, and counts Jason Guida, Antonio Mendes, Peter Sobota, Jordan Radev, and Mamed Khalidov among its past and present stable of fighters.
For those who are curious, here are some more interesting facts and trivia about Pudzianowski:In an interview with TV magazine, "Fakt TV," he states:
"A local (mafia) boss got me into jail. He's very influential, and a very brutal person. It was because of this brutality. I couldn't just stand and watch as he physically abused an eighteen year old boy. He hit the boy until he fell down, and then he kicked him and put a shoe in/stood on his face. It was that scene with the shoe that made me angry/made me lose it"
Mariusz @ the weigh-ins looking as big as ever:

Renzo Gracie signs with UFC, likely meets Matt Hughes at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi

by Dann Stupp on Dec 11, 2009 at 9:15 am ET
matt-hughes-3.jpg

Following Thursday's UFC 107 pre-event press conference, UFC president Dana White told a small group of reporters that a Matt Hughes vs. Renzo Gracie matchup was likely for the near future.

Hours later, Gracie's management group at Dominance MMA announced Gracie has signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC.

And just hours after that, Hughes (43-7 MMA, 16-5 UFC) confirmed he's slated to meet Gracie (13-6-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) on April 10 at the UFC's first-ever trip in Abu Dhabi.

Details of the event, which could be UFC 112, were not disclosed, though plans for an Abu Dhabi show have been in the pipeline for the past couple months. Last month at UFC 105, UFC U.K. Division President Marshall Zelaznik told MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com) the organization had been working on an Abu Dhabi event for 2010.

UFC president Dana White and UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta have also recently traveled to the Middle East to meet with officials about the show.

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and one of the Middle East's most Westernized cities. The country is home to nearly a million residents, and Abu Dhabi has become a popular tourism center under Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who's also a jiu-jitsu practitioner with ties to the Gracie family.

Hughes first announced his April 10 return earlier this month with a post on his official Web site. On Thursday he again took to Matt Hughes - 9-Time UFC Welterweight Champion to confirm the likely (though un-signed) fight with Gracie.

"I didn't know if I could say anything about my next fight, but I see that Dana has let the cat out of the bag," Hughes wrote. "So I can tell you what I know. On April 10, I will be fighting Renzo Gracie in Abu Dhabi. I haven't signed any paperwork, and I don't think Renzo has either. But I think this fight is going to happen."

Hughes, who had two memorable title runs at welterweight, hasn't fought since his decision victory over Matt Serra at UFC 98 in July. He rebounded from back-to-back losses to Georges St-Pierre and Thiago Alves with the win. The 35-year-old is just 2-3 over the past three years with victories over non-contenders Chris Lytle and Serra. In 2006 he defeated Royce Gracie, Renzo's first cousin, at UFC 60.

Gracie, a former PRIDE and IFL fighter, enters the UFC with a three-fight win streak, though he hasn't fought since his February 2007 disqualification win over Frank Shamrock at "EliteXC: Destiny." The 42-year-old had lost six of seven fights before the recent win streak, which also included wins over Pat Miletich and Carlow Newton.

I'm actually excited for this one.

What do you guys think about BJ training with the infamous Marv Marinovich?

From Wiki:

Marinovich studied Eastern Bloc training methods and was hired by Oakland Raiders owner, Al Davis, as one of the NFL's first strength-and-conditioning coaches. Marinovich learned to focus more on training for speed and flexibility, and much of his work became the basis for modern core- and swimming-pool-based conditioning programs. He later worked for the NFL's St. Louis Cardinals, and then the Hawaiians of the World Football League. He eventually moved his young family in with his in-laws on the Balboa Peninsula of Newport Beach, California.[1] He later opened his own athletic research center, and began applying the techniques to his children, Trudi and Todd Marinovich, introducing athletic training before the they could leave the crib and continuing it throughout childhood and adolescence.[2]

Todd Marinovich became a high school football legend, dominating all records in Orange County and coming to national attention when Sports Illustrated published an article, titled "Bred To Be A Superstar", that discussed his unique upbringing under his father who wanted to turn his son into the "perfect quarterback". The article declared Marinovich "America's first test-tube athlete", and mentioned his mother took him to museums, played him classical music and jazz while banning cartoons as too violent and instead viewing films by Alfred Hitchcock and Agatha Christie. Marv Marinovich had assembled a team of advisers to tutor him on every facet of the game.[2][3] In a noted passage, the article described that:

He has never eaten a Big Mac or an Oreo or a Ding Dong. When he went to birthday parties as a kid, he would take his own cake and ice cream to avoid sugar and refined white flour. He would eat homemade catsup, prepared with honey. He did consume beef but not the kind injected with hormones. He ate only unprocessed dairy products. He teethed on frozen kidney. When Todd was one month old, Marv was already working on his son's physical conditioning. He stretched his hamstrings. Pushups were next. Marv invented a game in which Todd would try to lift a medicine ball onto a kitchen counter. Marv also put him on a balance beam. Both activities grew easier when Todd learned to walk. There was a football in Todd's crib from day one. "Not a real NFL ball," says Marv. "That would be sick; it was a stuffed ball."[2]

Because of his strict upbringing and almost mechanical lifestyle under his father, some nicknamed him the "Robo QB."[3] Todd Marinovich went on to have a solid career at USC, but began to show signs of emotional rebellion against his strict upbringing under his father; by the time he entered the NFL as a first round draft pick, he soon became a major bust due to personal issues. As a result, an ESPN columnist named the elder Marinovich one of history's "worst sports fathers."[1]

Marinovich is currently a sports researcher at Sports Lab. In May 2009, Marinovich began training UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn for his August 8 title defense against Kenny Florian, at UFC 101 in the main event. Penn defeated Florian by a rear naked choke at 3:54 of the 4th round to retain the UFC Leightweight title. [1]

He's fuckin' strong.

Just beat me to it!

Pudz looked like a damn cartoon character running around flailing like that. Not bad for his first fight. This man has many questions to be answered though. I hope he turns into a legitimate fighter and not some freak-show.

Yeah, this fight definitely had a Bob Sapp quality too it. No denying the power in those strikes though. Those leg kicks were brutal!

I want to see Florian fight Frankie Edgar or Tyson Griffin next.
