She wants me to help her tone up. The problem is, I dont know what to tell her to do. She jogs 5 miles 4 times a week. She works out with me 4 days per week lifting weights. She works at a ladies workout express 2 days per week and eats a fairly balanced diet. She is 5'3 117lbs. She isnt cut at all. The only way I can describe it is thick skin. Dont flame me for this because I am happy with her but she is very frustrated as to why she cant get cut. Tomorrow she is going to do some HIIT on the treadmill for 15-20 minutes. Is there anything anyone can suggest to help her out?

She does running in the early morning and weight training in the early afternoon.

At 117 lbs. at only 5'3" tall, she doesn't necessarily need to lose weight. About how old is she?

If nothing else works, I know how you can lose 117 lbs. pretty damn fast.

She is 22. I know I know I could lose her but keep in mind its her that wants to get cut. I would be frustrated too if I worked as hard as she does and cant drop a single pound. She did the no carb diet for a month and her weight didnt change at all.

Sometimes, genetics work against you. If what she's doing know doesn't cut it, she just needs to ratchet things up (better diet, cardio, & weight training) or simply be happy with the cute little thing she is.

She puts in an average of 20 hours per week working out. Dont know how much more she can stand to do. She is going to change the weight training to doing sets of 6 on everything and do HIIT treadmill 2 times per week and 5 mile runs 3 times per week and see what happens. Any supplement ideas or other training ideas?

Post her diet in the Diet & Nutrition section and see if one of the Nutrition Goddesses can help fine tune it.

Dude stop reading the fucking modeling mags.....5'3'' 117 is nice...

Sounds like she is overtraining a bit and that neither of you knows anything about a good and healthy diet.
No carb diets are fucking stupid.

Why are you jumping on me? I am not the one doing this. She is. I told her that if nothing changed no matter what I ate or how much cardio I did, I wouldnt be working out or dieting. Whats the point of eating grilled chicken or steamed vegetables if you stay the same weight and body fat as eating double cheeseburgers? This is her idea so stop bashing me for her wanting to be lean. MyCATpowerlift I hope that is an old pic of your upper body because I wouldnt take advice from you on dieting or lifting knowing you looked like that.

first of all, if she wants to lose weight, she needs to do some research for herself. i guess you could do it all for her, but that's just going to make it harder. plus, then youre telling her what to eat, and when to workout, and that is just setting yourself up for a kick in the nuts.

have her post her workout routine and diet here. it sounds like she's doing an awful lot of work to have no results. there must be something fundamentally wrong with her approach.

my guess is it's the diet. many people think they're eating a "healthy diet," but when they actually write down what they eat, and see the types of calories they're taking in, their opinion changes. this may be a possibility. also, frequency of meals can make a huge difference. who knows without a little info?

I would have her create her own ironmagazine name, and do some research on her own. Have her post her workout plan and diet information, so we can judge her situation more clearly.

#1 - tell her to stop using the word 'tone'. she wants to build lean muscle mass. muscles do not tone, they grow or shrink.

#2 - too much cardio. drastically overtraining in that respect and it's counterproductive to her goals. no more 5 mile runs (maybe once a week if she absolutely insists). tell her to incorporate 2-3 sessions of HIIT/interval style cardio....that's all.

#3 - is she weight training with you 4 days a week AND going to that ladies express whatever to train 2 days a week TOO??? why the express thing? i'd scrap that, stick with a real gym and start with full body 3 times per week. 5-6 exercises including a compound movement for each major muscle group. she also need to train across various set/rep parameters. ie. MON=6x4, WED=3x8, FRI=2x12 of each exercise. exercises should be varied from workout to workout also.

#4 - is she eating ENOUGH of the RIGHT FOODS???? or is she eating a couple times a day and calling it healthy? diet is important. she won't make progress if her body is in starvation mode. just as counterproductive as overtraining if not moreso. clean foods, between 4-6 times a day. protein at every meal.

hope this helps a little. it's the best i can do without knowing more about her. this is a great site but maybe she'd feel more comfortable on a site like Oxygen where there are more women. just a suggestion. if she steps foot on the Shape boards i'll cyber slap her...

If she can do 15-20mins HIIT right from the start, she is not doing HIIT right. If done correctly, she will be wiped out in a few mins. Given that she does a lot of running, she may last longer than the average person who does not run.

The problem is most likely diet. Hey she may also have more LBM then you think making it hard for her to lose weight.
Make sure she is eating 4-5 small balanced meals a day. some protein, low Gly carbs and good fats. have her add 1 tb of olive oil to one of her meals. Good fat burns fat. Also some green tea caps wouldn't hurt anything

Where did I jump on you at?
I said it sounds like her diet, and that low carb diets are stupid.
What's the point of eating grilled chicken and veges??
Hmm, Not too sure on that one. Maybe she should start eating french fries covered in gravy?

It's not too old a pic. But granted, I had just come off a bulk ( that means, you gain weight children ) And I was sitting...
But if that's your opinion, than that's your opinion.

She did some HIIT on the treadmill at the gym for 10 minutes and was pretty wiped. She is going to attempt to work on her diet. Yeah I know she should be doing all of this herself but oh well. Sorry to those that I attacked. Thanks for the help

I, for one, would not like to die at the age of thirty due to a heart attack...

You may stay the same BF, but you'll probably be very unhealthy inside. BF is not the only measurement of one's health and/or physical fitness.

Maybe some EFAs would help a touch too if she doesn't eat much fish. And definitely green tea like TG said. I always recommend people stay away from white bread processed sugars and pastas too.

She's MINE! :yell:

You're in the wrong section. Go to the diet section. Eating a balanced diet is a really broad term. She needs to count calories, divide macros reasonably, eat smaller more frequent meals, drink lots of water, eat plenty of veggies and some fruits, etc. Once again, the diet section.
