Yep, I almost prematurely extinguishe teh ol Burner's life force a few times last year.
It was all on my sport bike. I had some close calls, but the one really stood out.
I met up with a group of riders one Saturday morning to cruise around before going up to Denver that evening for a an event. I left my riding jacket at my friend's place, as I thought we weren't realy going anywhere. So, I was just wearing my jeans and a tank top. As we grouped up, someone had the great idea to run a canyon up in the mountains. Great.
So, we went. If you've never run corners on a sport bike, it's really hard to ride slow. So...my speeds starterd climbing to the usual warp speeds I run at when wearing fully protected. I was in a nice right handed sweeper nearing triple digits, al things were fine, but something caught my attention in my peripheral. In the second I took my eyes from the road an my 'line' to what was off to me side, the bike drifted towards the edge of the road where all the loose gravel and debris was. I was litterally inches away from material that would have caused me to go down...into the woods with trees, rocks, etc. I actually told myself at that moment that "I am now going to die".
Luckily, somebody upstairs likes me, 'cause I was able to revocer from that.
Things I've learned:
* Never go do any serious riding without my two piece leathers
* Maintain focus of my surroundings
Slow down? Nope. I'm actually a better rider now since then, I am just using better judgement.
