Behind the Video of Eric Garner’s Deadly Confrontation With New York Police

On July 17, Ramsey Orta was talking to his friend, Eric Garner, about where to eat dinner — Friday’s, maybe, or Applebee’s. They eventually decided on Buffalo Wild Wings, but Garner never made it. Soon, a fight broke out nearby, Orta says, and after Garner helped break it up, New York Police Department officers on the scene accused Garner of selling untaxed cigarettes and attempted to arrest him.
Garner, a 43-year-old father of six who was unarmed at the time, argued with the officers about why he was being targeted. To corral Garner, one officer used what appeared to be a chokehold, a technique banned by the NYPD. Several others helped drag him to the ground. Garner, who had a history of health problems, died soon after.
Orta recorded the incident on his phone and the video has helped turn the fatal encounter from a local tragedy into a national debate over the use of force by police. Orta, 22, says he’s known Garner for several years and called him “the neighborhood dad.” Orta’s video shows what appears to be one officer pressing Garner’s face into the sidewalk as other officers attempt to subdue him. On the ground, Garner can be heard repeatedly saying “I can’t breathe.”
“I felt like they treated him wrong even after the fact that they had him contained,” Orta says.
Since Orta’s video became public, the officer who grabbed Garner by the neck, Daniel Pantaleo, was ordered to turn in his badge and gun; another was reassigned to desk duty. The four emergency medical workers who responded to the scene have also been suspended without pay. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said he was “very troubled” by the footage, and both prosecutors and the NYPD are investigating the incident.
Patrick J. Lynch, the president of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, criticized the department’s response as “a completely unwarranted, kneejerk reaction for political reasons and nothing more.”
Orta recorded another violent arrest at the same location in Staten Island a week earlier. He says officers have harassed him since the Garner video became public, but he says he isn’t likely to put his camera away if something happens in his Staten Island neighborhood again.
“It just gives me more power to not be afraid to pull out my camera anytime,” he says. “Even if they’re pushing me back, I might just like keep going forward and if I get arrested, hey, I got something on camera.”

I would have said fuck you mother fuckers and jumped right in and started cpr if that was my friend, no even if I was just a bystander. ..this country[USA] leans further to the right every year, 200,000 people in jail in 1980, today it's over 2,000,000[prisons are now corporate]... the 'right' is there to protect the wealthy, we all know this.. plus Americans are afraid of the 'left', we all vote against what is best for us, we're scared of gays, blacks,Arabs, even children immigrating from more ruthless lands frighten us.. we live in fear, therefore we need more cops to protect us[joking].. our politicians are trying to please corporations not citizens, and need more police to control the ever increasing out of work masses of citizens, it's only getting worse... being a cop or fireman in the city is a lifetime job, no education is needed, at the most a GED....

WTF does gay marriage have to do with anything? I can at least understand how a person could make the argument that many of the fiscal and social policies of the left are bad, but in no way does allowing two guys that are already butt fucking to call their butt fucking official hurting anyone other than the sensibilities of homophobes who can't stand the idea that faggots are out in the world butt fucking each other.
I butt fuck guys all of the time, and I can assure you no one is getting hurt except for the occasional virgin twink who didn't know what he was signing up for when he asked to be butt fucked.

and this is so foreign to me...
as a medic I worked with cops daily and none of them were like this
plenty of psych's and drunks and drug users and domestics and all sorts of shit and not a one of them ever lost their cool beyond zip tying some super asshole's wrist to their ankle (young healthy, drunk and fighting) and yelling..stfu! (I was actually the super asshole in this story)
and once where three cops turned into screaming drill sgts when a dickhead drove through a road block and actually hit me with their car while I was holding c-spine on a patient
they didnt even arrest the guy in the end and technically they could have for assault on an emergency worker in this state.. a c class felony
I never once saw a baton come out..or anyone get punched or kicked...or tasers used
Ive seen guns drawn for entering a scene of a shooting ...riot gear and bean bags for well..a riot
horses used for crowd control...no trampling or aggressiveness though ..just a slow push using the animals size
a thumb walked behind someones neck sure ..but that's a trained maneuver designed to gain control without injury
I just don't get why this is such a huge problem in some departments..I mean..wtf are they being taught by the FTO's or in their academy?

Right on. It is not political, it isn;t even an issue of department training. He killed that guy in cold blood. End of fucking story. The fact that the cop isnt serving time is a fucking insult.
It is an issue of training, someone with proper know how can cut off the blood supply and submit a person without restricting airflow, this officer obviously doesn't have that know how and has never applied this chokehold on a struggling person...

They didn't even need to be wasting their time on the guy but I saw 6 cop cars behind a pulled over moped last night so who am I to judge if police departments use their time wisely...
The fuckers need to be in prison waiting for their murder trial. The rest of the NYPD needs training on how to deal with civilians. Also, they need more firearm training. They seem to be some of the shittiest shots, too.
