Study of inmates finds omega-3 supplements might improve behavior

By Carol Ness, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
February 26, 2003

"In a recent study in England, inmates given daily vitamins, minerals and omega fatty acids drastically reduced their bad behavior. Compared to inmates who didn't get the nutritional supplements, they didn't fight as often, break as many rules, mouth off or act out as much."

"In some of the new studies just coming out, omega-3 supplements helped improve depression and bipolar disorder."

"Omega-6 fats compete with omega-3s, and omega-3s are losing the battle in the American diet, Hibbeln said. And studies on animal and human brains have shown that, without enough omega-3s, serotonin levels plummet. Low serotonin can lead to depression and impulsive and aggressive behavior, and

Hibbeln is convinced that our dietary changes are one reason American levels of depression and violence have risen."

Nice post Max :thumb:

Actually....there have been some studies out for a while on Omega 3's possitive effect on ADD and depression. :D

Our brains want.. 1:1 Omega 6's to 3's
Our Bodies like... 4:1

The "typical" American diet...10:1

The solution...eat more Omega 3's :D

So it's easy to see why so many are hormonally/psychologically out of balance! :D

Recommendations

In order to add these Omega-3's what is the best product? Any brands stand out above the others for quality?

Flax oil which is 54-57% Omaga 3's and about 21% Omega 6's..... Organic Cold pressed...many varieties to choose from Omega Nutrition, Barleans, Flora, Spectrum; and Fish oils...after that you start getting into 3/6 oil combos...like Udo's and Essential Balance from Omega....

There are some good posts here on Omega 3's/Flax :D

It's higher in Omega 6's......Cold water fish, esp salmon....and flax oil are the highest in Omega 3's.

Try to eat healthy diet...at your age...adding some 3's is not a bad thing....just don't worry to much about it! :D

thanks again DP...but im curious as to why so many people say things like (not just you) "at your age" & "since youre so young" . i get the same thing form my parents and older lifters that i talk to for advice. isnt a teenagers body essentially the same thing as an adults...we need as much nutrients if not more... i dont want to sound like a pissy b!tch or anything im just trying to make a minor point.

Not really, your still growing, high hormone, testosterone levels compared to an adult, therefore things I need to do don't always apply to you.

What STB said :thumb:..and there are things that we "don't" want to do that can limit your growth potential (like diet) or that can alter your hormonal profile/cascade...which is vastly different than "older persons!"

However, you are correct in assuming that you share the majority of physiological characteristics with others both younger and older :D

ok makes sense. i thought about that earlier, just didnt know it could be affected to such a degree. its just that since my body isnt exactly what i want it to be (trying hard & making progress though) im doing my best to rectify the situation.
thanks for your patience!

Stop eating twinkies, you know they cause violent behavior :hehe:
