For the first time in my life, I went lifting with my dad on Sunday. He's 45 and can bench 290, so he's pretty ripped. Anyways, there was this guy there, who threw on, I believe 245lbs to bench. He had his feet on the ground, and the only thing touching the bench, was his shoulder blades. He was pushing his entire lowerbody/abdomen off the bench with his legs. WHY???

My dad said that is horrible to lift that way. I bench with my legs bent, feet on the edge of the bench.

Any ideas on what this extreme body moving can do?

It can place all the stress to your upper back, more specifcally the spine which can result in a injury.

To bench, one should keep the butt on the bench and keep a lower arch in the back, use the upper back and neck and feet to assist with the push off. That is just one example of doing a bench press.

That's what I'm saying.

What amazes me, is how some of these guys can lift with such possibly career hindering postures.

The same thing with curls. When I do them standing up, I keep my back stright, and only use my arms. I see guys chucking their backs around, doing this and that, and by the time they've gotten the weight up, every muscle but the arms have been worked out.

Stupid people...

I use to go to a gym where this guy, when he benched, severely arched his lower back so much that it looked like it was ganna break in half! Everybody, including his partner, at the gym told him about it but he's one of these guys that thinks he knows it all when he knows squat! (no pone intended)

Man,
When i was in the military thier was this guy right,he was pretty strong, he used to bench 315 for 4-5 reps, the only thing was he used to bow his back so bad he was on his tip toes, lol, and he used to bounce it off his chest so hard i thought his freakin chest was gonna cave in, anyway, one day went up to him and thought i'd offer him some advise, I was like yo you ever tried to do it with your back flat it's alot harder, he informed me that this way is what was right and most effective for him, that he had tried it the other way and he saw the most results this way, hehe, i was like SERIOUS, LOL, then he proceeded to slap more weight on and do his thing, I was like WHOA, every time i saw him after that lifting me and my partner would Get a Good Laugh goin...

My point is sometimes these kinds of people are good for somthen....hehe

I saw a guy at the gym bouncing the bench press bar off his chest. I was going to intercede, but then i realized he was bigger than me. I guess I'll just wait until his ribcage snaps, he can't move, and then offer a suggestion.
