I'm new to this forum, so forgive me if I make any newbie mistakes in my protocols and procedures.
I'm a 6', 270 lbs, 47 year old male. I started lifting pretty hard and heavy about three months ago and I have seen some amazing gains but I'm a little confused on the nutritional aspects. Most of what I see on the web, concerning nutrition, seems to cater more to naturally thin or small statured males that want to bulk up and gain some weight and basically the advice is "Lift like a mule and eat like a horse and you'll get big". Problem is, I already carry quite a bit of muscle bulk. My legs are naturally massive with very little fat on them. My wife even refers to me as her Clydesdale. Most people are shocked when I tell them that I weigh 270 lbs because I look like I'm about 225 lbs. I attribute that to the fact that I have a lot of muscle bulk. But don't get me wrong here....I do have some ample fat stores on my body!! Especially in my "spare tire" region.
My approach thus far has been to eat lots of tuna, turkey and chicken breasts, eggs, low-fat milk and whey protein. I've been assuming that since I already have plenty of stored calories, the best thing to do is to eat low calorie, low carbohydrate and high protein meals and force the muscles to go to the fat stores for the energy that they need.
My question is simply.....is this the right approach? So far, it seems to be working ok. My strength continues to increase, my chest, shoulders and arms are getting bigger and bigger and also rock hard and my clothes are slowly beginning to get a little baggy on me.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!
