:thumb: This is what I do too - don't touch the other ones... (yes - I am that anal about what I eat... we all know this already... ).

But if you are going to go for a processed bar then there are a few that are not too bad...

You basically want to look for bars that have ingredients that you can understand .... So if there are ingredients that look like/ sound like methoxydiurate-enthalyse then you might want to give it a miss... Also - the less numbers in the ingredients list the better it is too...

Anything that looks/sounds like hydrogenated oil/fat you want to stay away from (transfats) and also things like high fructose corn syrup...

I usually try to stay clear of bars that have sugar/ glucose syrup/ corn syrup etc etc as one of the first few ingredients too... (esp. if it is the first ingredient)..

Look for quality protein in the bars - whey concentrate, whey isolate, casein, egg, soy are all ok (I don't mind soy protein - some have a problem with it)... Collagen is not a good protein source - so you want to watch out for things that have this high on the label..

Carbs that are good are things like oats, brown rice or whole grains.. Some fruit/fruit juice is ok too... Higher fibre contents are good... Bars without a lot of artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols are better too...

Fat sources that are the best are things like flaxseeds, nuts/peanuts, olive oil, omega-oils etc etc.

So if you look for things like:
Tri-o-plex - this is one of the better ones out...
Pure Omega 3 Protein Bar - this doesn't look to bad...
Tri-o-pro cookies - look ok...

Otherwise you can also do a shaker bottle with skim milk powder, oats, whey, and take some nuts with you.. Then you just eat the nuts and add water to the shaker bottle so you can drink it.

thats what I do. dont trust protein bars, they are not monitored by the food industry, so they can put what ever the hell they want in them.. stick to powder whenever I can get it. throw some powder and some oats in a shaker and I am on my way. I have been known to carry 2-3 shakers pre made for the day!!

if I had to chose a bar in a bind I might go metrx or powerbar. Like either one. but again, that is ONLY in a bind!!

Promax Protein Bars FAQ Why are the carbohydrates in Promax Bar such a dietary "must"?
Carbohydrates are essential for two reasons: (1) as an energy source and (2) for protein sparing.

Energy Source: The main function of carbohydrates is to serve as an energy fuel. The body's most important energy source is glucose, also known as "blood sugar." The most common source of glucose in the diet is the carbohydrate. The carbohydrates in Promax Bar are specifically designed to give you both immediate and long-lasting energy.

Protein Sparing: Another reason why Promax Bar includes carbohydrates is for its powerful "protein sparing" action. If your body does not get sufficient carbohydrates, it starts breaking down the protein in your body to get the energy it needs. And that could rob your body of the protein it needs to maintain your daily life (see protein below).

Looking to shed fat? Remember fat can only burn in the flame of carbohydrates.

Why are the 20 grams of protein in Promax Bar so important?
Protein comes from the Greek word meaning "of prime importance." And protein ??? like the 20 grams you find in Promax Bar ??? serves 3 main functions.

New Tissue: The formation of new tissue ??? anabolism ??? requires the synthesis of protein. For kids, that means growth. For adults, it means everything from wound healing to recovery after exercise. This anabolic process is especially important for athletes or individuals who exercise regularly.

Protein "Turnover:" In adults, protein is continually being degraded and re-synthesized. For example, your blood cells must be replaced every 120 days. In addition, you lose protein through perspiration, urine, skin, hair, etc. Unlike fat, there are no protein "stores" in your body. That???s why this constant protein "turnover" requires replenishing by dietary protein.

Regulatory: Protein also helps regulate body functions like carrying oxygen to your blood, hormone production, blood clotting, and the formation of antibodies that fight infection.

Did you know ??? 12%-15% of your total body weight is protein? About 65% of your body???s total protein is in skeletal muscles. There are 50,000 protein-containing compounds in your body. 10% of your brain is made up of protein.

Where does the protein in Promax Bars come from?
The two major proteins in milk are whey and casein. Both are extremely high-quality proteins, and both are found in the Promax Bar.

When is the best time to eat a Promax Bar?
Anytime you want a quick, delicious and completely nutritious meal replacement is a good time to eat a Promax Bar. Promax Bar makes an ideal great-tasting breakfast or lunch. It???s also a great pick-me-up snack, especially in the afternoon.

Do you exercise? Promax Bar gives you the ultimate pre-workout energy boost as it replenishes your muscles??? "fuel tanks," giving you both immediate and long-lasting energy. Promax Bar is also your best post-workout recovery meal, as its 20 full grams of quality protein quickly help you rebuild muscle fibers, supplying an on-the-spot stream of protein building blocks (i.e. amino acids).

My kids simply love Promax Bar. Can they eat them, too?
Certainly. In fact, protein is vital as your child progresses from infancy to adulthood. That???s because protein is needed for the formation of new tissue ??? for growth. Promax Bar contains 20 grams of high-quality protein. And the nutrients in Promax Bar make it a perfect addition to your child???s lunchbox. Of course, a well balanced and varied diet is essential for all humans. Consult your pediatrician for more information.

If I???m pregnant, can I eat a Promax Bar?
Yes. Promax Bar contains vital nutrients like protein, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, calcium, and folic acid that your body needs during your pregnancy. And Promax Bar???s 20 grams of super high-quality protein helps you get the added protein you need for lactation. Many women report that a great-tasting Promax Bar is far more enjoyable to eat during the first months of pregnancy, when nausea is usually at its highest.

Did you know ??? each liter of human milk contains 12 grams of protein? During lactation it is assumed a woman needs at least as much extra dietary protein as is secreted in the milk. Ask your ob-gyn for more information.

How many flavors of Promax Bar can I choose from?
Promax Bar offers you 11 great-tasting choices. They include Chocolate Peanut Crunch, Double Fudge Brownie, Honey Peanut, Chocolate Mint, Chocolate Caramel Crunch, Wild Berry Cheesecake, Rocky Road, Mocha Blast, Cookies n??? Cream, Black Forest Cake, and Nutty Butter Crisp.

Do all Promax Bars have the same ingredients?
All Promax Bars have essentially the same ingredients. Mocha Blast is the only one, however, that contains caffeine (5 grams).

Why are the antioxidants in Promax Bar important?
Exercise releases free radicals. Free radicals can be detrimental to your health and even lower your athletic performance levels. That???s why Promax Bar gives you all the powerful antioxidants, including A, C and E, that your body needs to protect itself.

Why do you include vitamins and minerals in the Promax Bar?
Vitamins and minerals do more than help protect your health. They also help and direct energy release and protein synthesis (see "protein" and "carbs" above). Minerals also help maximize muscle function and prevent cramping.

Is Promax Bar really the best tasting bar on the market?
In a head-to-head taste test with the other leading brands, Promax Bar easily scored number one in consumer opinion of taste. And we continually hear that no other bar comes close to our great taste. Of course, taste is subjective, but once you try Promax Bar we think you???ll agree that it truly is the best tasting bar on the market.

Is there anyone who should not eat Promax bars?
Promax is not appropriate for diabetics who must watch their sugar intake as well as people who are allergic to whey, soy, wheat or any type of nut.

designer whey (detour bar brand) just came out with an oat bar that has almost 60g of real carbs, and 30g protein. But like emma said, a homeade mrp is easy to do, chase it with a handful of almonds. Or a sandwich is always a pretty portable easy meal.

none. protein bars are glorified candy.

ive never really been a fan of bars though either, but thats cause they are rediculously expensive when compared to shakes...

what i will probably be doing next semester:
walk around with water bottle (poland spring or whatever) filled with a protein shake...... yes it could be a bit of a hassle to prepare, but nothing a small 3 dollar funnel can't do....

cost effective wise, it's just SO much better to go with shakes, and using a water bottle instead of a shaker cup lets you down a shake whenever without standing out to people
