How much protein is too much?

Is 1.5 Grams per pound of body weight the most someone should consume in a day. Does 2.0+ grams per day cause diminishing returns, harm the kidneys, or is this much just not necesarry?

A body builder should optimally consume 1.5 grams per pound of body weight a day. You can consume approximately 50 grams of protein every 2 hours. It is not advised to take more than this in a 2 hour period of time. Otherwise your body will retain buildup in various areas. (This you want to avoid).

Can you ever get too much protein?

Yes. Several medical conditions make it difficult for people to digest and process proteins properly. As a result, waste products build up in different parts of the body.

People with liver disease or kidney disease either do not process protein efficiently into urea or do not excrete it efficiently through urine. The result may be uric acid kidney stones or uremic poisoning. The pain associated with gout is caused by uric acid crystals collecting in the spaces around joints. Doctors usually recommend a low-protein diet in these cases.

^ Thanks for the info. Last year I did get get gout. It was enough to give me massive pain and cause me to crawl on the floor of my house, and limp to the doctor. The Dr. gave me a Uric acid blood test and it came back normal, but he still said it was gout. I now think the protein may have been a factor. I was taking large amounts then. I'll max out at 1.5. Thanks for the info.

I am worried about excess of protein too. That´s why I reduced my intake. I have a history of liver, kidney problems.

Glad I could help...

Well for me anyway I weight 225lbs.. I find it hard to even satisfy the 1gram of protein per body weight.. Usually during the week I eat 10 egg whites in the morning, then I will have a can of tuna for lunch, then 2-3 hours later a protein shake, then dinner I have usually chicken, steak, or lean hamburger. That is about it for me.. So I don't even think I'm hitting 225 grams. For me I find it hard to put your diet under a microscope. But I guess that is what I will need to do to perfect it.
