Is there any truth to the rumors of organ ( i.e. liver , kidney) damage due to protien shakes ?
I've been bringing my protien shakes into work and several people have approched me warning of possible organ damage . Should i ignore them or believe it ? I want to be able to answer them .

I don't believe it as long as you're not taking an excess amount of protein, say 4-5 times your weight. The kidneys can't handle that much protein. Next time they say something, ask them what they eat. I'll bet they say Mickey D's or something. Then mention heart attack and see what they say.

LOL, that's a new one I haven't heard...actually, what I think they are referring to is the fact that some people believe a high protein intake puts stress on the kidney's....so it's not the shakes per se, rather the high protein intake in general. I don't believe it, but I do think a high protein diet should include lots of water!

I can answer that for you right now . Everyone who has said something is in shape ( the round type shape )

Actually my doctor told me too much protein is bad for your kidney's. I go to have blood pressure checks(it runs in my family). He said don't take over 100g a day. Hell, I'm usually over that by lunch!!! Oh well, I'm hard headed anyway! So to answer the question....who knows???? IMHO I don't think it will hurt you. But that is me. Talk to someone who is a expert and get a second opinion if needed!!

Based on what the 'experts' say, we're all gonna die from what we eat sooner or later anyway. Why not enjoy it while you're here?

....and RD's think 70 % of calories should come from Carbohydrates....it's bullshit, they don't know a thing about BB!!!!

I hear a new one every day!

It's funny how "unhealthy" people try and find bad things about things that are actually healthy. Did that make sense?

That's basically what i've been telling them . Thanks for the back up :thumb:

I think they do it sometimes to bring us down , That somehow the healthy choices we make are "bad" thus making their choices somehow better .

Exactly....they wanna feel better about shoving donuts & fast food in the faces everyday so they constantly nag, bitch & criticize!

I love it when an overwieght person will say something like..."Oh, I can't eat plain oatmeal.". ''Oh, I can't eat all that healthy crap.". "Everything that's healthy tastes like shit.".

That really annoys me! I would love to have them taste my all natural oatmeal made with a little honey and cinammon...it tastes awesome!

Protein shakes hurting ya huh? Nope doesn't happen. I've been having either a myplex or a metrx three times a day for the last 8 years

hmm, i'll go out on a limb here and say that I would agree that too much protein and not enough carbohydrates for toooooo long of a time period could be detrimental to health. Obviously, the RDI for protein right now is kind of low for athletes, 50g/day, and we should consume much more then this for optimal muscle repair. But don't you guys think there is a reason why our bodies need carbohydrates as their primary source of fuel?? And why we get massive headachees when we are carb-deprived? And why we need to eat insoluble and soluble fibre for proper GI function.
Obviously, you need a different diet for different athletic needs, ie.runner vs. bb
I personally want to do some research into these elevated homocysteine levels due to excessive protein intake and CAD. I was a little worried about that for latter on in life b/c my family is prone to genetic cardiac problems.
in the end, everything in moderation.

You're bringing in another variable here, whole other issue. What does it have to do w/ whether a high protein intake is detrimental or not?

eating like 500g protein a day for an extended period will over tax your kidneys, but no one requires that much protein a day (not even pros really).

The studies showing that high protein diets can lead to kidney failure were performed on folk who already had damaged kidneys.

if these so called''experts'' where getting a weekly paycheck from a supplement company, i can tell you that they would be singing a whole different tune.one thing that alot of people dont understand is that you have to drink lots and lots of water.if you keep your system flushed, the toxins wont build up in your liver or kidneys..of course, this is what i've been told...

Not necessarily. I wouldn;t say lots and lots.

Doing so can result in over taxing your system and/or creating electrolyte imbalances. You heard of cramp? Nasty stuff.

just drink enough to stop yourself being dehydrated.

i said lots and lots for the simple fact that alot of people simply dont know how much water they drink on a normal basis. cramps?no. never had a single cramp in my life?i stay hydrated. and i keep my mineral intake up. peace

Ironically you can get cramps from dehyradtion and over-hydration.

I've woken in the night with knots in my calves cause of it. It's an awful feeling.

electroylytes and minerals and hydration and cramps. heres my take.if your lagging in one of these or all of these ,cal, mag, potas, and sodium your going to cause an imbalance in your system, which will cause cramps.i was told way back when i was a young pup in the bodybuilding world to drink lots of water,if your thirsty during a heavy training session, its to late your dehydrated.back to the topic of the thread.toxins from the liver and the kidneys from so called''protien abuse'' can be removed by drinking adaquate water, other toxins in the system can be removed by increasing your fiber intake.
