Pulled hamstring

I was on vacation in Mexico this past weekend and was playing kickball. Ended up pulling my hamstring. Got a bruise on the back of my leg about the size of a soft ball. How long do y'all think I should wait until I test it out to see if I'm ready to go back to work (legs)

try doing squats with no weight, if your ok, try squats with 135 and so on, I pulled a groin and went light and stretched alot and was good to go in a couple weeks, but it depends alot on how bad you pulled yours, the inside of my leg was purple but I was able to slowly work it to were Im at 85% max now
 
When you think it's ok... Give it another week


this is what i'm thinking. I just remember back to some of the leg days I've had and doing squats/leg presses/ham curls and remember how tight (felt like on the brink of pulling them working out) they got. kinda scares me.

When you get back at it be gentle. I pull/strain my left hamstring often and it alway lets me know if its not ready for the workload! Work on your rear delts in the meanwhile... Lots of dudes could use some attention there!
 
if you have a bruise in the hamstring itself it probably means that you have a small bleeding dues to a small tearing of the muscle,. as pushpull said RICE protocol. a pulled hamstring can be painful and irritating it can heal in about 2 weeks if you are careful: rest and DO NOT ENGAGE IN SUDDEN MOVES LIKE JUMPING RUNNING AND KICKING and do not workout legs, you can probably do some leg extensions. if it was a tendon then it can last for a long time and be a pain in the ass, but it does not seem so because tendons carry very little blood in them and do not cause bruising, they heal very very slowly.

RICE

Research now indicates that Rest and Ice delay recovery.

Inflammation

Research shows that inflammation is part of the healing process. Icing the injury decreases inflammation which means you slow down the healing process.

This goes into the negative effects of icing for injuries.

Rest

Increasing circulation to the muscle help you recovery faster.

Circulation delivers nutrients to the muscle for healing and then acts like a garbage collector, hauling off metabolic waste.

Increasing Blood Flow

To increase the healing process you want to increase circulation to the muscles.

That is accomplished by:

1) Heat-heating pad or warm bath.

2) Mild exercise which increased blood flow. Walking would work best.

Compression

Moderate compression to the muscle increases blood flow. Around 20-50 mm/hg of pressure works best. In plain English, either moderate wrapping the hamstring with knee wraps or wearing slightly tight pants/shorts.

Elevation

Elevating you leg increases blood flow. That is what you want, more blood flow to the area.

just RICE for the first two days then be careful about sudden moves for the next 3 weeks. ICE helps recovery if used in the beginning it had been used for hundreds of years and it works. Sure it delays the rush of blood and swelling and all that but it does that for 15 minutes or the amount of time you apply the ice which is an insignificant amount of time compared to the healing time. On the other hand it reduces pain for hours + the rush of blood to the affected area will be even better after the ice is gone in order to compensate for the temporary effect of ice + lesser pain that promotes movement and more circulation. at least ice reduces pain and the chances of using pain killers that could be ineffective in such cases which is already good enough even if it is going to delay your healing by 15 or 30 minutes ...
so Kenny i don't think you need research for such a simple matter it has been used for hundreds of years and i don't think you need research to prove that inflammation is part of the healing process this is also a medical fact known maybe before the roman empire so to speak, anybody who studied biology in elementary school knows that.

I really wasn't. but if that motivates you... your rear delts suck. :)
If I tweak and knee or hammy I try to replace the leg days with something different. to distract myself from the worry of shrinking legs and focus on something productive. It makes me feel like Im not wasting time in a holding pattern.

Flaunting Your Ignorance

I appreciate you reinforcing how physicians lack of knowledge in the field of exercise science and physical therapy, as well as pharmacology.

Science continues to change based on new research data. Organizations that govern physicians (AMA) continue struggle to catch up.

Like the majority of physicians, you are drug into the 21 century kicking and screaming.

Congratulations. You got it right. 15 minutes of ice therapy will do next to NOTHING to affect the healing process one way or another.

Glad to hear that you learned it elementary school and then by passed junior high school...although there is not documentation on that being true.

The fact that the RICE protocol still exist indicated that it not as "elementary" or well know as it should be.

What I find appalling about many of your post is that you continue to proclaim yourself as a "God" simply because you supposedly are a physician.

You continue to provide information, yet at times you state that you cannot reveal the source (Ronny Coleman post example).

As a supposedly physician you are an expert in exercise science, pharmacology, physical therapy, nutrition, etc.

You embellish your knowledge in these areas. You blend in fact with fiction.

Your are the "classic" physician that has enough knowledge to be dangerous at times.

Another interesting fact about physician that substantiates the above statement is how often they screw up...

The US is one of the leaders in this area.

Most likely your country is above the US in this category.

Unfortunately, this is NOT a category any country should wants to excel in.
