I'm a 19 year old college student who loves bodybuilding, but I'm being hindered by a negative mental perception and attitude because of a question on how a muscle grows.
I've seen pictures of Arnold Schwarzenegger around age 20, and in some pictures the very bottom of his chest looks thicker then compared to some pictures of him in his prime years, age 27,28. My question is as the chest grows bigger and longer does the very bottom of the chest grow in such a way that after some point it starts getting thinner?
Thank you.

The Chest Question

I am not sure I fully understand your question, I am just not sure what you mean by the chest looking thinner.

Most peoples workouts change over years and it maybe that Arnold required a different look to his chest or was just testing out a different look in his later life.

The way each muscle develops depends on the types of workouts and the angles etc. So in the case of the chest, if you do more decline work than incline work then the bottom half of the chest will grow more.

I would recommend trying to build the chest up evenly by doing an even number of incline, flat and decline workouts with similar weights.

I hope this answers your question.

Sorry, thank you for trying to help me. What I mean is as your lower chest DOES grow, will the very bottom grow in such a way that eventually it starts getting thinner?

As I said in another post, I just think Arnold leaned out as he got older. He lifted very heavy to gain size and strength when he was young, and then leaned out and perfected things as he got older.

heyMDR, off the subject for 1 question, do u mdr notice as you get older its harder to maintain the muscle tissue as compared to when u were 35-38 or no?

I think it does get tougher as we get older. More injuries, joint issues and such. I also think you're doing pretty well considering you are in the over 40 crowd like me.

I agree. Diet, nutrition, warming up, stretching, will become more important with age. Although there are great inspirations. In "Pumping Iron" Ed Corney was 44 years old and he looked great! Also Nubret and Zane have kept their bodies in shape, to some extent. I have a personal goal of maintaining at least an above average fitness level for as long as I physically can.
