This may be a dumb question...If you go them same distance does it burn the same amount of calories whether you run or walk? i.e. run 5 miles or walk 5 miles. You're moving the same amount of weight the same distance, so do you use the same amount of energy? Sorry if this is a really dumb question...

It's not just what happens during the workout that counts, but also how the workout affects your body afterwards. Post-workout metabolism is greatest in high intensity weight lifting but still significant in cardio. The difference between walking and running? I'm not so sure. I do know that a very effective method to get the benefits of both is HIIT. This is high intensity interval training. Run, walk; repeat.

You burn more calories moving faster because you are doing more work. Work is defined as (force * distance * cosine of the angle between the direction the object is moving and the direction the force is being applied). Therefore, it requires that you generate more energy to power that work.
