DO you use a power rack or smith machine to do squats, or do you use a squat rack with safety pegs where if you can't get up u drop it on the pegs?

A power rack. A power rack also has the safety catches, imho, for home use there is nothing better. again just my opinion, the smith machine sucks.

I use a power rack with the safety rods set slightly lower than my lowest range of motion for that exercise. If I can't make the rep, I just dump it.
Smith machine=worthless piece of shit.

Do any of you use the manta ray? I plan on using that and I was wondering if it is easy to get the bar off if you cna't make a rep.

Yeah. Just drop it back, or go down and let the safty bars get ya!

If you mention around here that you do squats using a Smith machine, people might try to hunt you down...

lol, I just thought more people did them just off a squat rack, but I can see how the no pins could definitely be trouble.

Wow, hard core opinions on the Smith Machine!!! If given a choice I will ALWAYS use a rack, power or squat. The problem is life doesn't always give you a choice. I tore a spinal erector by being stupid with a dead lift and not paying attention to what I was doing. It was a stinkin' warm-up set, but that doesn't matter when you can't even bend down to tie your show. The reason I say all that is to tell you not to discard the Smith Machine too fast. It was the only way I could do squats for a VERY long time. In his biggest days, Dorian Yates used the Smith Machine for his squats, he felt it isolated his quads better. Who am I to argue with a multiple Mr. O winner? As I said before, I still feel regular squats are far superior, but the machine isn't worthless.

I agree with ALBOB, regular squats in a power rack are far better I agree but I also feel the smith has its place and I use it every now and then for squats.

But I will agree that your just cheating yourself if you use ONLY the smith.
