By and large my meats come from chicken breast, lean ground chicken/turkey and tuna or salmon. But I loves some red meat.

The other night while preparing a flank steak dish (carne asada style with lemon juice habanero. sea salt and pepper), I was starving, and started to nibble on the raw seasoned meat I was preparing.
Probably not for everyone, but I thought it was damned good. Infact I put enough raw meat aside for a meal and cooked the rest for the next day.

Any heads up on raw beef? it is from an organic grocer etc so should be ok yeah?

:blah: Yeah yeah, and some people wont eat sushi either. My question is about nutritional value or health issues, obviously I like the taste.... almost like carpaccio.

Don't worry, you don't have to have any ;)

If you trust the butcher, then there are some great raw beef dishes. But be very cautious doing so.

Yeah you ever try the Healthy Butcher on Queen W? (I'm assuming if you're in Ontario you've at least been through Toronto). Really good stuff, organic, clean.

I mean, it's not like chicken right? I'm not gonna get salmonella or anything you think?

Heard of it, saw it on the web. Never tried it.

Do you watch The Food Network, Alton Brown does a show on raw beef Tenderloin.

Salmonella isn't the concern with raw beef. More so E.coli.

Well if you're ever in downtown T.O. and in need of some great cuts of any meat, check them out. Along with Whole Foods, they are the best butchers in town.

And I haven't had television about 10 years now. I'll look up the raw tenderloin recipie though. Sounds fantastic. Thanks!:thumb:

I had a raw beef dish while I was in France, as did my father. My father also was served a raw lamb dish. We made it out alive.

Mmmm....I love raw beef  I don't eat it but I'll nibble on it occasionally. Don't ever eat raw hamburg though. Well, I've done it too but you shouldn't. The meat goes through the grinder and those grinders carry tons of bacteria. The organic raw beef is fine occasionally but be careful.

Yeah, one of these dishes my dad had in France was raw ground beef with a raw egg on it, heh. He was like WTF. Ordering off a menu where you understand only choice words is fun stuff.

NO! Having raw meat and cooked meat in your digestive system at the same time can kill you! Salmonella, anthrax, ecoli, whatever bacteria is on the meat, it thrives off dead cells. When you have raw meat you have very few dead cells and the bacteria will not thrive... thus safe for the average or better immune system. When you cook meat it is all dead cells and the bacterias from raw meet would thrive in that. That is potentially LETHAL!

Same thing with eggs and milk(raw as opposed to homogenized). Sushi, don't worry about, the flash freezing works the same as cooking with heat, all the cells and any bacteria are dead.

I would wait a month before you eat cooked meat after you ate raw meat and visa versa.

Other than that raw meat is actually better for you than cooked meat. Just don't combine them.

Do a web search on "raw meat diet".

The thing about raw steak is different obviously than raw ground beef or chicken. The problem with ground beef (mentioned already) is that any bacteria in any portion of what gets thrown in, is thoroughly spread through it's entirety, so in order to be safe is to cook it completely. Steak is different, you'd be best just grilling both sides of the slab for a few seconds enough to burn off any collected bacteria and pollutants from exposed air and packaging material. If you like the taste then go for it.

Do not eat raw chicken, first of all it's disgusting and second of all salmonella is by far more unpredictable as far as where it may reside in the tissue.

Oh by the way the reason most people stick to grilled chicken as opposed to red meat is because red meat is higher in saturated fat. Just something to be aware of when you're really fiending for some beef.

What are you talking about?

He's right though, you should wait a month before eating cooked meat again after a raw meat meal....because it takes exactly 1 month for the raw meat to be digested.

The only thing I can say to this is, I should be dead if that's the case. I eat steak tartar at least once a month as an appetizer to my cooked filet. I've never even had so much as a tummy ache. So...

Yeah, no kidding. I want to see a source too because I call bullshit on this one. Not saying you guys haven't heard it before because I'm sure you have but I think who you are hearing it from is what matters. There is so much crap/hearsay without proof and sources on the internet. This is one that I would call crap but if you have a valid source I will eat my words :D

1 month to digest? Are you serious? the raw beef just sits in your gut for a month watching the rest of the food pass by its doorstep?

I was actually kidding.....sigh...my sarcasm is subtle like ninja.

Well I certainly would like to thank everyone for the uh... 'colourful' responses.

I won't worry about raw and cooked red meat in the same month, or even day for that matter, but I will make sure to use my favourite clean organic butcher.

Have fun with your inspections guys.......:booty:
