I heard that "Military Presses" and lifting with your shoulders can mess up your rotator cuff. Should I not do shoulder excercises, I was gonna incorporate some shoulder shrugs to work up the traps but decided not to so far. My dad's rotator cuffs are messed up.

ohhhh man. Fashong, you need to relax a little bit. You worry about every bits 'n pieces about everything. Just because your dad's rotator cuff's are messed up doesnt mean yours is going to mess up. Make sure you do the proper weight you can handle and have strict form. If you have sloppy form, you are prone to injuring yourself. Start out with miltary presses, db presses, shrugs, lateral raises, etc.. lightly the first week or 2 and then slowly progress your way up.

do rotator cuff exercises (do a search here for them. I have posted them a bunch) if you are that concerned.

True that... not to mention, SHRUGS shouldn't be any concern. Idk ANYONE who has hurt their shoulders doing those if they were doing them RIGHT. Just straight up, straight down.

ive had rotator problems a couple of times... so now i dont do exercises that hurt them often (flat bench/upright rows) and i do rotator exercises once a week.... i havent had any problems since....if u do feel a flare up...ice ice ice

straight up, straight down. DONT roll your shoulders when you shrug because that can and likely will cause you to run into rotator cuff problems.

i have a torn left rotator cuff right now. I still lift but in some pain. Now do partial rep for all benching. Now upright rows and shrugs don't bother me at all. I have lost about 200 lbs off a full bench now with this injury. Have a hard time doing anything over 150 lbs benching

Freeweight shrugs bother me a bit lately in the right side of my back, and upright rows I haven't done in some time because of my delts.

I have shrugged with up to 600 pounds and my body just doesn't seem to handle that well. I will be using a machine for awhile.

But does that have anything to do with the rotator cuff???

Benching does, yes.

Hell yes Matt. the pain when dropping the weight all the way down to my chest, creates so much pain that I have no strength at all in the left shoulder and arm at all. 6 months ago I could incline bench 390 for 1 rep. This injury wouldn't allow me to incline bench 100 lbs right now. All full range pushing movements with a straight bar are history for i'll bet a long time. I can work with Db's for some reason with only a little pain. I can press more total weight with db's for 1 rep then i can a straight bar

I was just busting your balls, PT.... insinuating that you couldnt bench 100 with a fine rotator. Just fuckin with ya.

Do you do anything to strenthen the rotator cuff? I used to get pain, but started rotating dumbells.... it seems better now.

I figured you were Matt. I had just got off hotmail and was upset with good old mom. I think the gear is getting to me as i have no patience at all. Man i need to take a step back and get a grip on myself before i hurt someone or someone hurts me. It's really torn good. They want to do surgery. I'll pass. I ice it every night and do rotator exercizes several times a week. that even hurts
Sorry Matt if I seemed rude. didn't mean it that way. Had to send mom an apology email also as my choice of words were way out of sorts

i used to have bad rotatator cuff from tennis and football injuries. The trainer got me doing a range of external rotation excercises and i havent had a problem since.

do rotator cuff exersizes, be sure to warm up, stretch well, and do your millitary presses with good, controlled form 2 second positive, 3 second negative, and bring the weight down infront of your head. you shouldn't have any problems if you train responsibly.
